Anniek, dochter van Yvonne Poppeliers en Gerrit Hendrik Vlijm, wordt op 23 december 198 geboren in het Andreas Ziekenhuis te Amsterdam. Ze groeit samen met haar grote broer Maar-ten op in Maarssen. Op basisschool de Regenboog blijkt ze talent te hebben voor macramé, maar op het Niftarlake College verruilt ze het macramé voor toneel, natuur- en scheikunde. Vlijtig werkt Anniek aan haar school waarop ze in 1999 haar VWO diploma behaalt. Ze weet al snel dat ze dokter wil worden (naast kassajuf) maar helaas wordt ze uitgeloot. Ze besluit rechten te studeren aan de Universiteit van Leiden en behaalt, tussen het feesten door, haar propedeuse in 2000. Gelukkig wordt ze in dit jaar wel ingeloot en kan ze beginnen met geneeskunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Tijdens haar studie houdt ze zich bezig met verschillende studentenbesturen en commissies, en schenkt ze koffie in de Bijenkorf. Na een keuze co-schap in Paramaribo, behaalt ze in 2007 haar artsexamen. Direct aansluitend vervolgt ze haar carrière met een promotieonder-zoek bij professor Krediet. Momenteel is Anniek werkzaam in het Rode Kruis Ziekenhuis te Beverwijk en ze zal per 1 januari 2011 beginnen met haar opleiding tot internist aan het AMC.
