Autonomy and Chirality in Molecular Motors

1 Just like chemicals have received a systematic nomenclature, the trivial names of knots should
be supplemented by a systematic name.
2 Cuteness should not be a reason to not eat a certain animal, especially if it would be the
environmentally friendlier choice like kangaroo.
3 If we are not willing to change our decimal to a duodecimal system, we should then at least
change our time fittingly to base 10, instead of an impractical combination of base 24 and base
60.
4 Fairy tales, myths and science fiction are great, as long as everybody recognizes they are just
that.
5 Scientists should not construe the term unstable to solely entail a propensity for full
degradation, especially when IUPAC clearly states it only suggests a state of higher energy than
some assumed standard. Nonetheless, to avoid confusion the term ‘metastable’ is mostly used
in this thesis.
6 Flemings left hand rule is to electric motors, what chirality is to molecular motors (this Thesis).
7 If only a few degrees of rotation is a selling point for unidirectional rotation, then a review on
the subject might include nearly every asymmetric chemical transformation, as argued in
Chapter 1, S. Yamamoto et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 6849–6853.
8 The unstable state of molecular motors based on overcrowded alkenes is not the triplet state as
suggested by J. Torras et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 2009, 113, 3574–3580.
9 An asymmetric potential energy surface does not automatically ascertain unidirectionality nor is
it an indispensable prerequisite for unidirectional rotation, as demonstrated in Chapter 1.
B. Bredenkötter et al., Chem. ‐ Eur. J. 2014, 20, 9100–9110 and U. G. E. Perera et al., Nat.
Nanotechnol. 2012, 8, 46–51.
10 When you make a strong argument for Maxwell’s demon not being evil, you should not use a
devil for its depiction. E. R. Kay et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 72–191.
11 Photo‐irradiation of molecular motors does experimentally not result in racemization of its
stereogenic centre, additionally, it is in the least misleading to present different geometries for
a supposedly identical species in the main and supporting material, S. Amirjalayer et al., J. Phys.
Chem. A 2016, 120, 8606–8612 (Figure 1).
12 It is a shame that several elegant overcrowded alkene producing domino reactions only produce
non‐functional molecular motors (see Chapter 5). L. F. Tietze, et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131,
17879–84, and Chem. ‐ Eur. J. 2011, 17, 8452–61.
13 It is misleading to claim a functioning continuous 360 degrees rotating motor that uses 10 units
of fuel per 3 rotations when from the experimental data, it can be derived that under
continuous rotation it uses 424 units of fuel per single rotation. M. R. Wilson et al., Nature 2016,
534, 235–240.
14 Some people work on fantastic molecular switches without reporting or realizing that those
molecules are likely fully functional molecular motors. C.‐T. Chen, Y.‐C. Chou, J. Am. Chem. Soc.
2000, 122, 7662–7672.

Chem. A 2016, 120, 8606–8612 (Figure 1).
C.‐T. Chen, Y.‐C. Chou, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2000, 122, 7662–7672.
