It’s not an easy task to finish a Ph.D. study. Without the support from you guys I would not be here. From the bottom of my heart, thanks a lot to all of you for being part of my life.

Foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Prof. Andreas

Herrmann. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of the Polymer Chemistry and

Bioengineering (PCBE) group and support my Ph.D. study. I still remembered the first time when we meet in Shanghai. We talked a lot about science and life on that night. I received your offer the next day after our talk. Dear Andreas, many thanks for introducing me to the exciting nucleic acids and biomaterials research fields. I really appreciate your guidance on my Ph.D. research throughout the past five years. You gave me a lot of freedom to work from organic synthesis, DNA asymmetric catalysis to biomaterials. Meantime, you helped me to establish the framework of my Ph.D. research. The interdisciplinary research environment in our lab gave me lots of help for my academic development. Furthermore, your comments on my Ph.D. thesis have benefited me a lot. I will never forget what I have learned and achieved in our lab. I wish you all the best with your work and life in Aachen.

I also would like to express my sincere gratitude to the reading committee: Prof. Marleen Kamperman, Prof.Jan van Hest, Prof. Kalina Peneva. Thank you for your dedicated time to read and evaluate my thesis.

Many thanks to my paranimphs Yifei Fan and Hongyan Li. Thank you for your kind help for my PhD defense.

Very special thanks to my co-promoter Dr. Giuseppe Portale. Thank you for your time and invaluable technical support on my projects. You helped me a lot with the characterization of SUP fibers by SAXS and SEM. Dr. Evgeny Polushkin, thank you so much for your effort to help me characterize SUP fibers by SEM. The results presented in my thesis would not have been possible without your help.

Moreover, I want to take this opportunity to thank Prof. Katja Loos and Mr. Jur. Thanks a lot for your arrangement and offering me many opportunities to operate the machines such as POM, tensile tests in polymer lab. Dear Jur, I cannot remember how many times I came to you with some questions concerning the tensile test. But you are always patient for teaching and helping me with all the problems. I wish you all the best in the future.

Then, I would like to give my great gratitude to the people within the PCBE group. Dear colleagues, I am really lucky to meet all of you who make my stay in Groningen really a wonderful memory. Many thanks to Karin and Ursula for the help at the start and during m Ph.D. with all the paperwork. I sincerely want to express my gratitude to Dr. Lifei Zheng and Prof. Kai Liu. 飞哥 (Lifei), you’re my daily supervisor when I joined in PCBE group. It was you who helped me start in the lab. In the first two years of my Ph.D. period, we worked together on the DNA based asymmetric organocatalysis. Your excellent scientific ability and multidiscipline knowledge gave me deepest impression when I discussed with you. Apart from scientific research, you also gave me a lot of support in my life in Groningen. I never forget mahjong time with you in my place when your wife and daughter were in China for two months. I wish you all the best with your scientific career and your happy family, Qinhong and Lulu.

凯哥 (Kai), my great thanks to you. I really appreciate your advice, the fruitful discussions and our collaborations. In work, you are always filled with passion and energy and work until midnight. I never forget the SAXS measurements we did together until 2 am. After the measurements were done, you still worked in the office for a long time before went back home. You also gave me a lot of suggestions for my thesis and papers writing. Without your help, my thesis and papers would not be completed. Now you have your own prince and two princesses, wish you all the best in your independent scientific career and your happy family.

Jan Willem, you’re the first colleague that I met in lab. Your big table closed to window in

office attracted me a lot. And I took over it immediately after you graduated. I will always remember the time you taught me how to do DNA solid synthesis. Mark, our “gifts” man. Thanks a lot for your time ordering different stuff for me. Thank you for your tiny Suzuki trying to recharge my car, although it failed. And thank you for help me write the Dutch summary. Thanks, man. Wish you all the best with your girlfriend.

Zhuojun and Qing, you two are so nice and I really appreciate the pleasant times with you.

Qing, you’re the model husband among our Chinese community. You are daddy, mommy, and chef. In the lab, you always did experiments for your wife. Besides your wife, you also helped me a lot on purification of different DNA. Thanks. Of course, we had lots of memories out of lab, traveling to Portugal, Keukenhof, playing mahjong, etc. Thank you for your hospitality in Finland during last Christmas. I wish all the best to you and your lovely daughter, Ruby in Finland.

Jingyi, thanks a lot for helping me purify kanamycin B products. Thanks the clothes from your

son, Tuantuan. Thank you for providing me a variety of postdoc information. Wish you and your husband Shuo all the best in Eindhoven. Tiancai & Yang, I really enjoy the memories with you when we riding around the Vlieland. Lei, your lifestyle shocked me a lot. You really know how to live. Hongyan, Konstin, Gurudas, Avishek, Pavlo, Jun, Pei, Chao, Eliza,

Shuaidong, Pengkun, Miancheng, Yu, and Xintong, thanks very much for being there for

me in the past few years.

涛哥, Tao Zhang, you’re the first Chinese guy when we arrived at Groningen. You picked me up at Groningen station at midnight and took me to the dormitory. I’m sorry to disturb your sweet dream that night. In the following days, you and your wife Wenjun helped me buy bike, register in university and city hall. I never forgot the delicious Chinese food you made. Of course, I never forget the mahjong time with you guys. Wish you, your wife and your lovely daughter, Nuannuan all the best in Leiden.

Xiaoming, we are classmates when we studied at Nankai University since 2011. After

graduation, we became alumni in RUG again. Thanks so much for signing rental contract for me and riding with me from P-building to H-building at 3 am. Wish you and your wife Qianli all the best. Bin, thanks a lot for providing the Flash and helping me with ESI-MS. Yifei &

Yihui, I really enjoy the memories of riding together with you in Hoge Veluwe National Park.

Hopefully we can do it again with little lovely daughter Mige in the future. Gongbao, how small the world is. We studied together, worked together in SWU during our bachelor's time (2007-2011). After that we did our master in two different cities (2011-2014). In 2014, we meet each other here in Groningen again. Wish you and your wife Jinfeng all the best in the future.
