Hoofdstuk 1 - Marktomvang en groeivooruitzichten

1.A Marktomvang

De VS is, na China, de tweede belangrijkste markt ter wereld voor chemische producten.

In 2013 bedroeg de omzet voor chemische producten in de VS 465,7 miljard euro (zie tabel 1).

De Amerikaanse chemische industrie bestaat uit meer dan 10.000 bedrijven die +/- 70.000 producten produceren. De chemische industrie is ook een belangrijke industriële werkgever in de VS; de directe tewerkstelling bedraagt 800.000 werknemers en de indirecte tewerkstelling meer dan 2,7 miljoen werknemers bij toeleveranciers

. In 2012 investeerde de sector 57 miljard US$ in R&D en 1 op 5 patenten die in de VS worden aangevraagd, zijn afkomstig uit de chemische industrie.

De Amerikaanse producenten van basischemie zijn voornamelijk geconcentreerd in de staten gesitueerd aan de Golf van Mexico, waar op petroleum en gas gebaseerde

grondstoffen geproduceerd worden in raffinaderijen. Texas en Louisiana zijn de grootste producenten van basischemie. De productie van andere chemische producten, zoals plastics, farmaceutische producten en meststoffen is meer verspreid over verschillende staten (zie kaart 1).

1.B Amerikaanse invoer chemische producten

Van alle producten die de VS uit het buitenland importeert, nemen chemische producten een zeer belangrijke plaats in. Chemische producten zijn nl. de 4

belangrijkste

importcategorie in de VS, na computers & elektronische producten, transportmiddelen en olie en gas (zie grafiek 1) :

De Amerikaanse invoer van chemische & farmaceutische producten kent een

voortdurend stijgende trend (enkel onderbroken in 2009). De invoer is op 10 jaar tijd bijna verdubbeld. Tijdens de jaren 2001-2009 werd steeds een handelstekort geboekt, maar die trend keerde in 2010, waarbij er voor de eerste keer in 10 jaar een

handelsoverschot werd geboekt. In 2014 werd echter opnieuw een groot handelstekort geboekt (zie grafiek 2)

De Amerikaanse invoer van chemische producten (excl. farmaceutische producten)

bereikte in 2014 een nieuw record van 103 miljard US$. Nadat de economische crisis

ervoor zorgde dat de Amerikaanse invoer van chemische producten in 2009 met bijna

1/3e was gedaald, kende de invoer een spectaculaire heropleving in de laatste jaren (zie

tabel 2)

De belangrijkste invoercategorieën in 2014 waren: bulk petrochemische producten (31 %), zgn. ‘specialties’ (18,6 %), ‘agro chemicals’ (11,6 %), %), plastics en kunststoffen (13,7%), anorganische chemische producten (9,5%), zepen, detergenten & cosmetica (9,4 %), synthetische rubberproducten (2,5%), synthetische vezels (2,4%) en tot slot vernissen (1,1

%). (zie tabel 3)

Chemische en farmaceutische producten zijn ook de belangrijkste exportrubriek vanuit Vlaanderen en België naar de VS. In 2014 bestond ongeveer de helft van de totale Belgische uitvoer naar de VS uit chemische en farmaceutische producten en bedroeg 9 miljard € (zie tabel 4).

Verwacht wordt dat de Vlaamse export van chemische producten naar de VS het de komende jaren niet gemakkelijk zal hebben. De Amerikanen hebben immers door hun activiteiten in schaliegas, gasprijzen die nog maar 1/3

bedragen van de prijs van een jaar geleden. Als dat vergeleken wordt met de energiekosten in Vlaanderen, heeft de VS daar een groot voordeel.

Dit kostenvoordeel heeft in de voorbije jaren geleid tot uitbreidingsinvesteringen. Dit zal

er bvb. voor zorgen dat tegen 2016, de ethyleenproductie in de VS 30 miljoen ton/jaar

zal bedragen (+ 12% tov 2011). Ook ‘downstream polymers’ en ‘olefins’ productie zal

stijgen in de komende jaren.

7 1.C Groeivooruitzichten

De Amerikaanse vraag naar chemische producten is afhankelijk van de evolutie van de econonomische groei in de VS. Er wordt verwacht dat die economische groei de

volgende jaren tussen de 2 en 3% per jaar zal bedragen (zie tabel 5), wat hoger is dan de verwachte groei in Europa :
