Ten years ago when I was an undergraduate, I dreamed that I could have the chance to study abroad. This dream is like a seed planted in my heart. A few years later, as you all know, I got the opportunity to do a Ph.D. in the Netherlands. And now, I have almost finished my studies in Groningen. When I look back on my Ph.D. journey, my heart is full of gratitude. It is a unique and great experience that I enjoyed and learned a lot. At this moment, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the people who have supported me throughout my Ph.D.

First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Oscar. Thank you for offering me this opportunity to join the Molecular Genetics group. You are a wonderful supervisor and the most optimistic person I have ever known. Thank you very much for the trust, freedom, encouragement, and support that you gave to me during my Ph.D.

Secondly, I would like to thank the members of the assessment committee, Prof. dr. N. I. Martin, Prof. dr. J. G. Roelfes and Pro. dr. D. G. Moll., for reading and approving this thesis.

Also, I want to thank all my collaborators Prof. dr. S. Panke, Prof. dr. N. Budisa, Dr. S. Schmitt, and Dr. V. Kubyshkin. Thank you all for your help in my research. Prof. dr. S. Pank and Dr. S. Schmitt, I’m very honored to join the project of ring shuffling. Prof. dr. N. Budisa and Dr. V. Kubyshkin, thank you for providing the hydrophobic pentynoyl peptides.

Studying and working in MolGen has been great. I would also like to express my gratitude to my dear colleagues. Jan, Jaap and Danny, thank you for leading our group with pleasure working atmosphere together with Oscar. Siger, Anne DJ, Harma, Anne H, Manon, and Jannet, thank you for all your help and your friendly chats during

these years. Manolo, thank you for your guidance at the beginning of my Ph.D. You are such a knowledgeable person and thank you for the discussion when I got stuck in my project which really helped me a lot. Jakob, thank you for your generous help in chapter 4 and chapter 5. Chenxi, you are such an amazing person. It’s always very pleasant to talk with you. Your presence makes my life so much easier and happier. Meishan, we have only known each other for a short time, but we get close very soon. I really enjoyed shopping with you. All the best for your Ph.D. Dear Xue, thank you for taking care of me when I travelled to Lausanne. You are a lifelong friend, so I’m sure we will keep in touch. I wish you a successful career and a happy life with Chengjian and the baby.

A big thank you to my sport mates Jella, Auke, Chunxu, Zhibo and Qian. I en-joyed a lot when we play badminton together. Jella, you are an excellent teammate who never complains and always help me to win. Thank you very much. Zhibo, thank you
