Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook June 2 – June 8, 2016
Heavy drenching rain was observed across the northwestern part of the island this past week.
Ample rain was received over most of the island of Hispaniola during the last week. Rainfall totals greater than 200mm were recorded in parts of central Haiti according to TRMM Estimates. Some reports of flooding have come out of the Ouest Department. Large totals were also observed over many other parts of northern/Central Haiti and northern Dominican Republic. Except for far southern Dominican Republic, rainfall amounts greater than 50mm were ubiquitous.
This general precipitation pattern yielded more area of positive rainfall anomalies than negative for the week. After multiple weeks with very heavy rainfall over the course of May, 30-day precipitation anomalies are positive for most locales. A similar story is found when looking at longer periods as well. Consequently, widely spread green and lush vegetation conditions remain, according remotely sensed vegetation indices. For the upcoming outlook period, precipitation models suggest seasonable conditions will prevail for Hispaniola. Localized heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely in the usual spots, which may produce well in excess of 100mm of rain for some areas. Areas left out of the stronger convection may only observe light amounts of rain.
