Acknowledgment

Everything comes to an end. Probably like everyone else, I experienced many ups and downs during my stay here. However, thanks to the most amazing people that I met over the years in Groningen, I can say that my stay here has been one of the greatest experiences in my life. Needless to say, I could not finish my thesis without expressing my gratitude to them.

First and foremost, Ben. Thank you for allowing me to do my research in your group. I really appreciated the way you supervised me and my development. I am grateful for all the suggestions and help that I have received from you over the years. Your enthusiastic attitude to our research kept me going through all these years and made it truly a great pleasure to work with you.

A large part of this thesis concerns functional surfaces. Therefore I would like to thank my second promotor, Petra. Thank you very much for all our discussions, help and input in our surface-related projects.

Sander, it was really a pleasure to work with you on our projects and see the beginning of your independent career. I am sure you will become a star in the nearest future.

I would like to thank my reading committee Prof. Roeland J. M. Nolte, Prof. Moniek Tromp and Prof. Adriaan J. Minnaard for correcting my thesis.

Wesley, the beginnings were hard, but over time I began to appreciate your teaching methods and realized that you were the best teacher that I ever had. I am grateful for all your help and everything that I learnt from you. Needless to say, without your help this thesis would never be finished.

I would also like to thank my paranymphs for their help and friendship. Jana, you are definitely the most outstanding person that I ever met. I enjoyed the most the time when you were still working in the C-wing. Thank you very much for your comforting arm and cheerful attitude. Tom, first of all, your help during my PhD studies could not be overestimated. Over the years in Groningen we became real friends and I really enjoyed your inappropriate jokes and all the dinners and drinks we had together (especially with Dorien). It was great to see you blossoming during your stay in Spain and in your new job.

Tineke, you truly are the mother of the group and without you my stay here would be miserable. I’m very grateful for all the gossips, jokes and comforting words and many advices I heard and received in your office. I enjoyed every single time time

you tried to tease me or make me feel uncomfortable with your awesome jokes. You are an amazing friend.

I am also very grateful to all the people who, with their everyday effort, make sure that our research can run so smoothly. Inge thanks for your always needed support. Pieter, Johan, to appreciate how important and wonderful the job that you do, one should try to take an NMR when both of you are on holidays. Theodora, Renze thanks for running the MS facilities. Hans, thank you very much for elemental analyses. Monique and Jacob thank you very much for all help.

Prof. Edwin Otten, I am really sorry that I was bothering you with my crystals. Thank you very much for all the X-Ray structures that I received from you.

Prof. Pierro Sozanni, and Prof. Angiolina Comotti, thank you very much for your help and input in our project.

José, meeting you was a highlight of my PhD. It was a great pleasure to work with you in the same lab and share the office (desk to desk). We shared together many cheerful moments and a few burdens which connected us with unbreakable (hopefully) bond. Thank you very much for proofreading my thesis. Carla you were by far the sweetest and nicest person here. Thank you both for being such wonderful friends.

Didi, you are a great guy and excellent chemist. I’m really glad that I had a chance to work with you and I enjoyed every bit of time that we spent together working in the C-wing.

Carlijn, some people get somewhat not so talented students. But I got you! It truly was a pleasure to be your supervisor and friend. Thank you very much for your hard work, which hopefully will come to a successful end. I am sure you will become a great chemist, even better than you already are.

Franco, thanks for all the borrels, beers and time we spent together. I am sure you will do great in Hong Kong.

Fabio it was great to meet you and work with you on our projects. It is great to see that our hard work was so fruitful.

Clemens, you are the most awesome professor in the institute! Thanks for all the breaks, discussions and advices.

Simon it was great to meet you. Your everlasting optimism is really contagious. Please remember that eating is not cheating!

Sumit after all these years we defend on the same day. It’s great to see our work successfully finished. Good luck with your future career.
