Fun in Chucktown (Charleston)
I am scrolling through my pictures, trying to figure out what I am going to write about. There is so much I have to tell, so much to write, but I have a feeling that this is going to be pretty cliché but going on exchange to the USA -or wherever you plan to go- I assure you it will be one of the best experiences of your life.
There is not anything I love more than traveling. Traveling is a beautiful luxury where simplicity and spontaneity come together in exploring the unknown. Where one week we had to leave Chucktown (aka Charleston) because of hurricane Dorian and ended up at our friends’ parents’ house in Aiken which was basically a villa with a pool. Whereas a few weekends later I had decided to book a trip to California to visit a friend and ended up camping in Joshua Tree National Park, sleeping under the stars.
I have explored so much of the beautiful country that is the USA. I am so grateful, but this whole experience would not have been the same without my friends and family that came to visit and the amazing people I got to meet and get to call my friends. Everyone in Charleston was so welcoming and the International Office was so helpful and organized events where we all as internationals got to meet each other and were matched with other American college students as buddies.
Before going to Charleston, I made sure I chose my courses on my interests and that they would match my major American Studies. Moreover, I looked at the schedule and had classes from Tuesday till Thursday. I took surf class at the College of Charleston as an extracurricular subject. Something special which is not possible her in the Netherlands.
These four months have been filled with beautiful sunsets, hot and chilly beach days, lots of surfing, a lot of partying, and of course the millions of options of American fast food.
One time we ordered the biggest pizza ever, which took 8 people to finish. Besides all this, I
also helped with volunteer work, and did a project for the Office of Sustainability. Studying at the College of Charleston was an experience full of opportunities.
If you are still in doubt; “Heed the hollerings of your heart, grab hold the horns of uncertainty, and steer the snorting beast in the direction of your wildest dreams.” This quote from the book You are a badass every day is something I aspire to life by.
