ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to my promoters Prof. Dr. Peter de Jonge and Dr. Annelieke Roest, for all the support during my PhD trajectory. Thank you for being patient and motivating me during this period. Without your supervision, I could not have concluded this dissertation.
I would also like to sincerely thank the assessment committee (Prof. Adelita Ranchor, Prof. Pim Kuipers and Prof. Frans Pouwer) for their time and patience to read this dissertation. It is a pleasure to have such a highly qualified committee assessing my work.
I also happened to have the support of great co-authors that I would also like to mention here: Petra Hoen, Robert Carney, Johan Denollet, Kenneth Freedland, Sharon Grace, Said Hosseini, Deirdre Lane, Louise Pilote, Kapil Parakh, Adrie Seldenrijk, Brenda Penninx, Giulia Iozzia and Pim van der Harst. Moreover, I would also like to thank my former promoter during my bachelor studies in Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Guilherme Gutman.
Also, I would like to thank all my former colleagues at the UMCG, specially my former roommates Jan, Frank, Maria, Ella and Ando. I have nothing but good memories from the time we worked together. Furthermore, I would also like to thank my colleagues at the AMC: Jörg, Wanda, Erik, John, René, Astrid, Susan and David for all the patience in this period of transitioning while finishing my thesis.
I am also very grateful to my family for supporting me in this journey: Sergio, Raquel, Felipe, Luísa, Betty, Marcia, Bruno e Rodrigo. Moreover, I also want to acknowledge all the friends I have made living in these four different cities: Rio de Janeiro, Groningen, Utrecht and Almere. Last but not least I would like to dedicate this work to two beautiful souls that unfortunately passed away during the completion of this dissertation: my grandmother, Áurea, and my “furry” daughter, Minnie. 208 Conclusie
