About the author

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Vera de Bel was born on February 14, 1991 in Winschoten, the Netherlands. After graduating from the Gymnasium, she studied Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in 2013 and moved back to Groningen for the Research Master (ReMa) Behavioural and Social Sciences at the University of Groningen. During the ReMa she did a research internship with Matthijs Kalmijn at the University of Amsterdam and she collected the first MAFNA data for her Master’s thesis, as a pilot study for this thesis. She obtained her Research Master’s degree in 2015. In September 2015, Vera started a PhD position, funded by the NWO Talent program. During her PhD, she did a two-month research internship with Eric Widmer on ambivalent family relationships at NCCR LIVES, Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Gerontology and Vulnerability at the University of Geneva. As of February 2020, she works in Geneva as a research assistant for the CH-X project where she does research on the personal networks of young adults in Switzerland to investigate which social capital matters for their educational attainment and entrance to the labour market. She also teaches the social network analysis seminar at the Faculty of Social Sciences (Department of Sociology). She will continue as Postdoctoral researcher in July 2020.
