Before thanking the people, I would like to first thank the city where I conducted my research. Groningen, a city embraced with peace and calm, is a perfect place for carrying academic research. I left my footprints all over the city during these years and Groningen will be a part of my heart.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to my supervisor Prof. Sijbren Otto for the continuous support of my PhD study, your great patience during the tough early stage of my PhD and insightful guidance to simplify complex problems into feasible experiments. Through the years, your word and deeds allowed me to realize the most precious thing in academic research, that is to perform unique research with profound impact. I wish you the best in your career and I am sure you will make more important contributions in the field of system chemistry and the origins of life.

I would like to thank the members of the reading committee: Prof. Katsonis, Prof. Walther and Prof. Lüning for constructive feedback for my thesis.

My sincere thanks also goes to Annette for the administrative assistance and Monique and Theodora for their technical support.

Gael, you are the most important person for me in my PhD career. Thanks for your insightful discussions in the lab and precious advice on how to be a qualified scientist. Additionally, I was always amazed by your football skills. Andreas, a sensible, clever and bright gentleman, it is always comfortable to work with you. Xiaoming, a honest person, thanks for your company with long chats in the office and all the best for your future. Babis, you are a man with humor and we had a good time in the lab. I am sure you will be an excellent PI. Andras, you taught me everything about far-from-eqiuilibrium dynamics, thanks for your cooperation. Jianwei, your hardworking gave you fruitful achievements, which inspired me to make continuous efforts. Good luck with your future. Yang, thank you for helping me a lot during my first months as a PhD student. Morteza, without your help Chapter 5 would not have been realized. Saleh, Hugo, Andrea and Jan, you are the source of fun in the group with countless jokes and laughs. Giulia, I will never forget the music we played together (with Tilde and Johnny). Elio, thanks for your help on the modeling and your constructive comments. Boris, the journal to Malta with you is a nice experience. Asish, Yigit and Meniz, I value the intercultural communication during many discussions. Piotr and Ivica, you are both very smart person perceived as weird. Yannick, Bin, Kai, Omer, Jim and Ankush, many thanks for your help with our project after I left Groningen, I really appreciated it. Thanks to many other group members, Boris, Pim, Guille, Ivana, David, Mathieu and Vittorio, for the nice moments we spent together.

Groningen has a large Chinese community where there were various events such as hotpot or BBQ every weekend. I really enjoyed the moments we spent together. Lifei, you are a great person, which set up a life standard for me. Kai, I am sure you will be an academician in China. Wei (Chen), a funny person, free as a bird. Qing, an accountable person, always can do two persons' work. Tao (Zhang) and Jiawei, the most social perosn in the community. Zhiyuan, a joyful big eater. Thanks also to Zhongtao, Jiawen, Jing, Yun, Youtao, Honghao, Jintao, Wei (Yuan), Jun, Zheng, Zhenchen, Qingkai, Jiquan, Zhuohua and Tao (Yuan).

There are two places I spent most of the time in Groningen: the lab and the football pitch. Yun (Si), you are the Beckenbauer in our team capable of playing any positions including the goal keeper. It is unbelievable. Qihong, a smart player with great skill and you are never tired. Wei (Qing), the best guitarist in our team. Chao, a sophisticated old fox. Qiming, our great keeper, you are a bit overweight but your reaction is fast. Guowei, you are the person who took me into the team Groningen United. I am also grateful to Sen, Chen (Lao), Weili, Pan, Zixu, Minmin, Chenxi, Zhenwei, Guanhua, Yuzhen, Liang (Zhang), Feng (Gao) and many other football mates for the nice time we spent on the pitch.

Last but not least, I would like to thank my family: my grand parents, my parents (in-law), my brother and other family members. The more I grow up, the more I can feel your love. I would like to express the deepest appreciation to my wife Jingyi and my son Tuantuan. The things that we have been through, no matter good or bad, make what I am today. I am on my way to future, where you are there.
