Dankwoord
Hoewel dit proefschrift op mijn naam staat, zijn er veel mensen betrokken geweest bij de totstandkoming ervan. Ten eerste de patiënten die hebben meegewerkt aan het WIPO-onderzoek, ontelbare vragenlijsten hebben ingevuld en ook de patiënten die het op zich namen om twee weken lang een accelerometer te dragen. Het is bewonderenswaardig hoe graag jullie mee wilden werken en fijn dat de koffie altijd klaar stond. Zonder jullie was dit onderzoek niet mogelijk geweest!
Voorts wil ik onderstaande mensen bedanken.
Beste Prof. Dr. Sandra Brouwer, door jouw deskundigheid en drive om studies altijd nóg beter te willen maken, wist je mij scherp te houden en uit te dagen als dat nodig was. Ik heb heel veel van je geleerd de afgelopen jaren. Daarnaast mocht ik gebruik maken van je netwerk om de wijde wereld in te gaan. Zeer bijzonder dat ik naar PREMUS in Toronto mocht en zomaar bij Liberty Mutual, Hopkinton, V.S. ons werk stond te presenteren. Bedankt!
Beste Prof. Dr. Sjoerd Bulstra, ik heb altijd bewonderd hoe je je tijd wist te verdelen en dan ook nog altijd scherp wist te zijn tijdens mijn promotie-overleggen. Jij wist het verhaal te vertellen wat de patiënt ervoer, en dat te vertalen naar de wetenschap. Altijd een positieve draai. Dat geeft de promovendus moed in bange dagen. Bedankt daarvoor!
Beste Dr. Martin Stevens, hoe vaak ben ik wel niet bij je geweest, altijd gaf je rustig antwoord en binnen maximaal twee dagen (of nog sneller) had je m’n stukken nagekeken. Betere begeleiding kan een promovendus zich niet wensen. Buiten de wetenschappelijke werkzaamheden om, moet ik natuurlijk wel even onze Volvo-for-life passie benoemen, wat ook wel zo zal blijven. Bedankt voor alles de afgelopen jaren!
Beste Dr. Paul Kuijer, een team heeft meerdere krachten nodig om top te presteren. Eén daarvan is een enthousiasmerend teamlid die altijd tijd en energie voor je heeft. Dat was jij. Beste Roy en Josue, bedankt voor jullie inzet. Zonder statistici geen onderzoek! Altijd op korte termijn kon ik mijn statistische struggles met jullie bespreken. Jullie werkten lang door om de analytische modellen klaar te krijgen. Ongelooflijk bedankt voor jullie hulp.
Orthopeden uit Nij Smellinghe, in het bijzonder Carolien Kooijman, zonder jou was ik nooit in dit onderzoek gerold. Jullie hebben mij destijds als tweedejaars student geënthousiasmeerd tijdens een stage. Jouw telefoontje heeft tot dit geleid Carolien. Bedankt voor jouw/jullie inzet, ook later met het rekruteren van patiënten voor mijn onderzoek.
Junior Scientific Masterclass (JSM), in het bijzonder Jans. Bij jou was altijd tijd voor een bakkie en ondertussen goede gesprekken voeren. Met als hoogtepunt natuurlijk de Compass Week in Zwiggelte. Zonder jullie financiering was ik nooit gepromoveerd. Dank daarvoor.
Els, Yvonne, Janneke en Harriët, bedankt voor jullie hulp bij de logistieke zaken maar vooral ook de praatjes tussendoor en jullie luisterend oor!
Beste Kim, Charien en Giorgio, bedankt voor jullie hulp bij het bezoeken van patiënten in de avonduren. Zonder jullie hulp had ik dat nooit in mijn eentje gered!

Lieve Nynke, al doen we beide totaal ander onderzoek, ik heb veel van jou geleerd. Al was het maar om even te sparren of om een stuk door te lezen. En als het even niet lukte, kreeg jij als positieveling me er altijd weer bovenop. Maar ik ben wel eerst ;-). Dank voor alles laiverd!
Curriculum Vitae
Tjerk Hidde Hylkema was born on March 22nd, 1993, in picturesque Oudega,
the Netherlands. He is the third son of Gerk Hylkema and Lia Zeilstra. After he fi nished VWO education at CSG Liudger Drachten, he started studying Medicine at the University of Groningen in 2011. During the second study year he became involved in research at the departments of Orthopedics and Health Sciences (division Community and Occupational Medicine) of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Th is led to a successful MD/ PhD application in 2015. One of his studies was conducted in collaboration with Harvard University, Boston, United States. He presented studies in this thesis at several international conferences. Additionally, he earned several certifi cates, including a clinical monitor certifi cate. During the evenings he taught and guided Bachelor and Master Medicine students with much pleasure. He initiated a training program for the Dutch (medicine) progress test.
Tjerk Hidde combined his research with clinical rotations at UMCG, Medical Center Leeuwarden and Nij Smellinghe hospital Drachten. He has done his final medical internship at the departments of pulmonary diseases and cardiology of Martini Hospital Groningen. This led to confirmation of his special interest to oncology and physiology, and he pursued a career as pulmonologist. In 2018 he received his medical degree. After finishing his PhD, he became a pulmonology resident (supervisor dr. Van Putten, Martini Hospital Groningen). Currently, he performs his internal medicine training (supervisor dr. Hoogendoorn, Medical Center Leeuwarden). He lives together with Nynke Spinder in Groningen.
