Acknowledgments (Dankwoord)

Prof. dr. Katherine M. Bushby, dear Kate, you gave me the opportunity to get to know the scientific world in a warm environment, which flourished my academic interest.

Prof. dr.

Gurdeep, I enjoyed working together, and I wish you all the best combining your surgical duties and scientific interest. Many thanks Jan Hudecek, all participating pathologists and laboratories, the CFMPB, PALGA and NCR, with your help we were able to gain much insight into the reliability of

Curriculum Vitae

Emilie Groen was born on May 6th 1981 in Leiden. She grew up with two older brothers. In 1999 she graduated from secondary education (Gymnasium) at the Rijnlands Lyceum in Oegstgeest. After spending a year in Grenoble, where she followed a course on French, she continued with medical school at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in 2000. During her clinical internships Emilie performed a study on familial adenomatous polyposis at the University Medical Center Groningen, supervised by dr. André P. van Beek. She went to Newcastle upon Tyne for her scientific internship. There she performed a study evaluating the diagnostic strategy of limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2A under supervision of Prof. Katherine M. Bushby at the Institute of Human Genetics and participated in sev-eral other studies on muscular disease. Upon return to the Netherlands, she followed her pathology training at the Amsterdam University Medical Center, location AMC. Since 2013 she is working as a consultant pathologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, and subspe-cialized in breast pathology, dermatopathology and cytology. From 2016 onwards she combined her clinical duties with the research projects described in this thesis, under supervision of prof. dr. Jelle Wesseling, dr. Esther H. Lips and in close collaboration with dr. Michael Schaapveld. She co-orga-nized the international ‘7th Dutch Breast Pathology Course: ‘Preventing overtreatment of breast cancer

precursors’ in 2018, where possibilities and challenges in diagnosing and classifying breast cancer

precursor lesions were explored within a clinical context. Furthermore, she wrote a book chapter on intraductal papillary carcinoma in the Encyclopedia of Pathology together with her promotor prof. dr. Jelle Wesseling and was involved in several multidisciplinary studies mostly on breast cancer care. Emilie lives together with Roeland van Schaaijk and their two lovely sons, Nout and Philip.
