Acknowledgments

This is not the result of one person’s work; this is what came out of a fortunate collaboration between several parties.

I would like to thank my supervisors Prof. Steven de Jong, Prof. Jourik Gietema and Prof. Marcel van Vugt for all the patience you put into the projects and my learning process throughout these years. Whatever comes next in my professional path will always be shaped by your guidance.

Thank you Prof. W. N. Keith, Prof. A. van den Berg and Prof. F.A.E. Kruyt for being part of my assessment committee.

Prof. Leendert Looijenga, Ton, Nynke and Gretha, your roll was very important in this thesis, thank you for the great amount of work you dedicated to the miRNA project.

Dear Prof. Albert Suurmeijer, the PDX work could have never been completed without your knowledge and help. Vincent Leeuwenburgh, thank you for taking part of the analysis of the PDX study.

Dear Coby, Hetty and Gert Jan, your support in all different ways made me feel confident and motivated to keep working, I really appreciate the kind words and atmosphere you provided all these years. Dear Phuong, you guided me in the lab in 2012 and again in 2014. You were always caring, helpful and sympathetic with me, no matter how unexperienced I was. I will always remember that with affection. Thank you Wytske and Neeltje for all the technical support. Dear Joost, Arjan and Shang, we could have never been able to finish the animal work without your help. Dear Geert, Henk and Theo, your assistance at the flow cytometry unit was crucial to complete the experimental work of this thesis. Dear Jacko, thank you for your support with coordinating the tumor slide consignment within the UMCG and external hospitals.

Dear Gerda, I don’t have enough words to express what a good colleague and friend you were. You know this was possible only thanks to our collaboration. We learned, laughed, yelled and worked together so much during our PhDs that we became inseparable.

I would like to thank my roommates Linda, Annechien, Winsen, Martin, Elly and especially Esméé and Stephanie who made me feel welcome the very first moment I arrived to the office and provided me with insights about the Dutch culture and more importantly, lots of affection.

Thank you coffee mates: Elles, Margot, Jolanda and Gerda (again!). You helped me keep my mental sanity. Harm Jan, this was also your work. Our talks on environment and politics, spiced with your great sense of humour, were always refreshing.

Colleagues of the Medical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Pediatric Oncology and Hematology department thank you for the partnership and nice environment you created every single day in the lab.

My dearest friends: Artem, José, Natalia, Raúl, Lili, Paola and Marti. You were always there for me, both in good and bad times. Artem, we looked for each other as if we were family, and somehow that will always remain.

Santi, has sido mi cómplice y mi soporte. Abuela Sonia, has sido mi estabilidad. Armando y Sonia, me han brindado todo lo que pudieron y más; su apoyo y amor me permitieron estar hoy aquí. Gracias a todos ustedes, son la parte más esencial de este rompecabezas.

In a series of preclinical studies, we evaluated the utility of targeted liposomal delivery of DEX in models for prostate cancer bone metastases and showed enhanced antitumor

Recently, it was shown that hyperactivation of the PI3K/AKT/mTORC pathway was linked to cisplatin resistance in TC models where resistant sublines showed higher levels of p-AKT 473

In the present study, we therefore evaluated the possibility of using TC PDX models to study AFP and ß-HCG serum levels in relation to PDX growth and response to cisplatin

In Chapter 2, we investigated three microRNAs: miR-371a-3p, miR-373-3p and miR-367-3p as putative tumor biomarkers during and after treatment with cisplatin combination

Daarnaast hebben we onderzocht hoe humane testiskanker cellijnen en op humane testiskanker-gebaseerde diermodellen gevoelig kunnen worden gemaakt voor cisplatine.. Het doel van
