Past four years were full of puzzles, problem-solving, maze running and construction. Of course, the end of this journey would not be possible without people surrounding and supporting me. I would like to highlight their help, effort and time that makes this happened.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for Prof. Jianting Ye. You were the first one to open the door for me into this wonder flatland of 2D materials. This turns out to be an endless maze full of dark corners and questions. I am happy that we managed to highlight some of these together, which led to some very good works. Nevertheless, I believe that there are still many questions remains unanswered and there is a lot of space for further exploration. I hope that you will agree with this as well. Your critical and optimistic point of view was always ether helpful or motivating and tempting, which plays only a positive role in any case. Especially, our discussions in front of the wall or some other random objects were quite memorable. It was a pleasure to work with you. Thanks a lot and all the best for you, your family and your group.

Secondly, I would also like to that Prof. Maxim Mostovoy for being my co-supervisor as well as a member of my defence committee. Despite quite rare meetings and discussions, they were always well prepared, dense of knowledge, full of fruitful ideas and useful suggestions. Thank you very much.

I would like to give my special thanks to the members of assessment committee members: Prof. Bart van Wees, Prof. Yoshihiro Iwasa and Prof. A. Brinkman. Thank you very much for the careful and critical reading of my thesis and your time dedicated to it. Your comments helped me a lot to improve my writing. Dear Prof. Bart van Wees, I really enjoyed your lectures since my master project, they were full of great physics experiments that can inspire even a dead man and make him think. Prof. Yoshihiro Iwasa, I also enjoyed the discussions with during FET meeting, I hope to see you during some future conferences.

I thank Prof. Uli Zeitler and his PhD. student Inge Leermakers from HFML in Nijmegen for their great help during the high field experiment. I hope to visit your facilities in the future to perform some more groundbreaking experiments.

This was a very good experience to work with you. Every time I visited your lab was quite remarkable and informative.

I would also like to thank Prof. Wesley Browne for chairing my PhD defence session and for introducing me into this wonderful field of chemistry. Special thanks for all the members of the defence committee, Dr Greame Blake. I also appreciate Prof. Alex Brinkman and Prof. Teun Klapwijk for overcoming a long-distance and good questions and suggestions.

Let me also thank our former group member, Prof. Jianming Lu, with whom we started this journey. Your conservative approach to the experiment was quite time-consuming but very successful at the end. Making dead things working is something that I have learned from you. Namely, doubting everything and rethinking all the steps made is a very important habit that is necessary to achieve the planned goal. Thank you and all the best to you.

Special thanks go to PhD Sergiy Kutovyy for first introducing me into scientific research back in 2012. It was a pleasure to work with you.

I also want to thank all the members of the DPCM group. It was nice to work with you. Hope you will perform some great experiments in the near future. Thanks to Dr Qihong Chen, I really enjoyed the hotpot time with you. Good luck with your new position in Beijing. I also thank our former post. doc Jie Yang for her early contribution to CVD projects. Dr Abdurrahman Ali, it was interesting to work with you. I hope you will find some good projects in Germany. Dr Zhang Le, I believe that your motivation and self-education will help you to perform great during your post. doc. time in our group. Dr Lei Liang, it was nice to learn some chemistry from you, hope you are doing well outside the academia. Puhua Wan, I believe that you will find some luck soon, it might be closer than you expected. Special thanks to Minpeng Liang, I hope that your courage and motivation will help you to overcome future difficulties. Xiaoli Peng, I wish you good patience with your clean project and hope that you will manage to focus on important things. I also wish good luck to Sardar Hameed. I hope that you will be able to learn quickly.

I would also like to appreciate Tomas Mutter, Harm Jan Bekhuis, Arnold Dongelmans and Samuel Golightly. You were very curious students and I enjoyed working and learning together with you. I hope that the research experience will help you in your future career. All the best to you.

I would like to appreciate the students from FND group for their contribution to the cleanroom facility maintenance. Especially, Talieh Ghiasi and Christian Leutenantsmeyer for their quick response on EBL issues. I also thank Alexey Kaverzin for his strict approach against chaotic mess in the cleanroom. Talieh and Alexey, it is always a pleasure for me to have an interesting chat with you during conferences. I also had a nice and interesting discussion with all of you guys during shared conferences. I also thank Johan Holstein, Tom Schouten and Hans de Vries for their technical support of nano lab and cleanroom facilities. I want to express my gratitude for people whose work was aimed to save me from very troublesome paperwork. Dear Ursula and Henriet, thank you very much for your administrative supports. Your help was always timely and allowed me to focus on the encouraging part of PhD life.

In the past 4 years, we had to develop various equipment, setups and constructions. This wouldn’t be possible without our continuous technical support provided first by Jan Harkema, Arjun Joshua and Joost Zoestbergen. Jan, I hope that you enjoy your retirement somewhere on the sailing boat. Arjun, it is good that you eventually managed to find a place for you and your wife here in Groningen. Joost, I hope you will have a lot of fun and nice projects in our group. All the best to all of you. Special thanks to people from the workshop for their friendly and professional approach towards crazy projects. It is great to have such a facility nearby.

I would also like to thank the members of Cohort 2013-2015. It was a great time Arijit Das, Dima Bederak, Henrieke Heideman, Geert Hoogeboom, Tenzin Kunsel, Jing Liu, Xinkai Qiu, Azadeh Rahimi, Hendrik Sikkema, Natasha Sukharevska, Chen Wei, Xu Yang. It is always great to see you guys all together or one-by-one. Special thanks to Wytse Talsma for his great help with Samenvatting.

Let me express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Caspar van der Wal for his personal input in developing the Top Master Nanoscience program. I hope that you are proud of your work in this direction.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for my good friends, who always supported me: Pavlo Gordiichuk, Andrew Rudavskyi, Leonid Solianyk, Artem Zapara, Sasha Salo and Kateryna Frantseva. You always brought some positive and memorable moments into my life. Thank you.

Dear Artem Zapara and Minpeng Liang, it is a pleasure for me to have you as my paranymphs. Thank you for all your contribution during this important event.

Finally, I would like to thank my family for their continuous support with any kinds of questions. Mom and Dad, it is great to have you and I’m happy to see you here.
