ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Every story has an end, also my adventure in Groningen came to the end. It was a great time in my life and learned a lot in the scientific and personal field. This words are dedicated to all of you taking part in last couple of years of my life chapter called PhD.

I would like firstly thank my supervisor Dirk for giving me the opportunity to delve into a playground of membrane protein science. It allows me to challenge myself in many ways and start to evolve as a scientist. Many thanks to my co-supervisor Bert Poolman. Your suggestions and questions always put some new perspective on the projects I was working on.

I am also very grateful for the dedicated work and intellectual contributions of few generations of talented postdocs, PhDs, research assistants and students. Without them my work would have been harder.

Marysia – ciężko opisać jak ważną osobą stałaś się w moim życiu. Przyjaźń i wsparcie, które otrzymałam od Ciebie i Waszej rodziny jest nieoceniona.

Sonja, Lotteke, Hallie – thank you a lot for time we shared, for great memories, for “experiencing Netherlands” and our own cultures.

Joris, you were so different from the rest of us in the office 16.133. Not only you manage to stay sane in a “girly office”, you also brought some new craziness to it. With you we spread the wings and become the office with unexpected and extraordinary things created and performed. The crazy duo with Alisa keeps my work-life balance on a good truck during my last year.

My dear paranimfs Alisa and Stephan you are so different but both mean a lot to me. Thank you for your support and being yourselves. Alisa you are a walking sunshine don’t change a bit. Stephan, I always enjoyed your companion and broden my horizons by spend time in your company.

Jonas, I don’t remember how did we become friends, do you? But I guess it was just a natural thing. Getting to know you was an adventure full of unexpected laughter. Also, thank you for connecting me with Brenda, Maciej, Magda, Gert, Martyna, Heloisa. The Saturday dinners together were a great time of laughter, games and even tears (yes, Jonas, still about

the jalapeño).

Albert, thank you for your kindness and all the help. How new we appreciate the same kind of music.

Ruslan, thank you for late, early and weekend companion in the lab, for countless hours of talking, and sweating all the PhD stress out during all the kilometres we run together. Also many thanks for the companion of Franz, Boqun, Raj, Arnold and Ryan during “not so working hours”. Great you have been there working as well, so I did not fill so lonely.

Łukasz, nie ważne jakie sprawiasz wrażenie i jak ciężki jest Twój dowcip, zawsze mogłam na Ciebie liczyć. Zawsze dbasz o tych wokół siebie.

I cannot omit the invaluable help from Ria and Gea. Ria big thank you for helping me with experiments. Gea without your technical help our lab performance would be in danger. Nynke, I have never suspected I will gain a friend by supervising a student. But here you were, so hard working, kind and fitting so well within Enzymology group. I am proud to call you not only the student but also my lab partner in some hectic work with ECF transporters. Joury, it was a pleasure to share with you supervision of biocatalysis and membrane enzymology course. I always admired how think-through were your plans and learn a lot about “how to manage Dutch students”.

Dirk’s group: Alisa, Marysia, Sonja, Lotteke, Huifang (Hallie), Michael, Inda, Joris, Lisa, Rianne, Nynke, Rameez, Rajkumar (Raj), Nicola, Li (Iren), Stephan, Gianluca, Dorith, Artem, Joana, Emanuela, Valentina, Aisyah, Albert, Cristiane, Morten (in random order) I would like to thank you for a great time, lots of fun, scientific input in my research, and this little bit of craziness that makes life so interesting.

I am proud I was a member of a wonderful group of people (Membrane Enzymology group). Adi, Albert, Alisa, Arnold, Artem, Bauke, Boqun, Cristiane, Cristina, Dorith, Duygu, Emanuela, Frans, Franz, Gea, Gemma, Gianluca, Hallie, Hendrik, Jacopo, Jelger, Jonas, Joury, Joris, Katja, Kostas, Lisa, Lotteke, Luca, Li, Łukasz, Marysia, Martyna, Marina, Margriet, Michael, Michiel, Tran, Morten, Nicola, Nubina, Patricia, Paul, Raj, Rameez, Ria, Rianne, Ruslan, Ryan, Sonja, Stephan, Tjeerd, Valentina, Vanessa, Wojtek and all the students thank you for all wonderful moments.

I am thankful all my Polish friends and their partners for creating a home far from home so welcoming: Marysia, Maciek, Lena, Hania, Justyna, Michiel, Gosia, Magda, Ewa, Łukasz, Milenka, Mieszko,Gabi, Gosia, Maciej, Pani Isia, Łukasz, Kuba, Wojtek, Paweł and many more.
