I would like to acknowledge everyone who participated in the research, supported me, gave me confidence or was involved in this thesis in some other way. First, I gratefully acknowledge the contribution of all participants in the Netherlands Study of Depression in Older persons (NESDO) and Older Persons with medically Unexplained Symptoms (OPUS) study. Further, I would like to mention the following persons in particular:

prof.dr. Richard Oude Voshaar (promoter)

Dear Richard, thank you very much for being my promoter. Your enthusiasm, drive and expertise were inspiring to me. I want to thank you for the patience you had throughout this journey. Due to all my other side activities, including the PVOA project in particular, a deadline sometimes ran out. A person could not wish for a better promoter.

dr. Hannie Comijs (copromoter)

Dear Hannie, without you there would be no NESDO research. My thanks for your critical eye, expertise, accuracy, and always quick responses.

(4)

dr. Linda de Jonge (copromoter)

Dear Linda, I would like to thank you for your guidance during this trajectory. These were intensive years and I often called on you. However, you were always there for me.

I would like to acknowledge the reading committee , consisting of:

Prof.dr. Filip Bouckaert Prof.dr. Erik Buskens Prof.dr. Max Stek

and other opponents, for their time and effort to evaluate my thesis.

Matheus Hendrikus Leonardus Arts was born on June 9th, 1971 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. He grew up in Silvolde, a small village in the ‘Achterhoek’, in the East of the Provence of Gelderland. He graduated from high school (MAVO, HAVO) in 1989 at the Isala College in Silvolde. During this period, Matheus spent more time on the running track than at school and took part in many athletics competitions in the Netherlands and abroad. He also trained for flat track racing for several years. He then followed a one-year pre-university education program (VWO) in evening classes in Utrecht as well as additional beta courses at the James Boswell Institute of Utrecht University. During the next five years, he studied part-time Psychology at the Utrecht University and next to his study, he worked fulltime as an elderly home care helper at ‘Stichting Thuiszorg Utrecht’.

In 1996 Matheus started studying medicine at the University of Antwerp (RUCA, UIA), Belgium. During his bachelor degree in medicine, Matheus worked in his spare time at the anatomy department of the University of Antwerp and taught practical anatomy. He also spent many hours in the neurosurgery department of the University Hospital Antwerpen (UZA). After graduation cum laude, he was admitted for two long internships neuroscience abroad and after that, he continued his master degree in medicine at the Free University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium. He followed a one-year pre-specialization in psychiatry at the VUB and graduated cum laude. He studied acute medicine (emergency medicine) at the VUB and in 2008 he was admitted for residency training in psychiatry at Mental Health Care West-Northern Brabant (GGZ WNB), Halsteren, the Netherlands. He completed his training as a psychiatrist in 2012 at the University Psychiatric Center, University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the Netherlands, and began his PhD trajectory in geriatric psychiatry under the supervision of prof.dr. Richard Oude Voshaar.

(7)

He started his career as a psychiatrist at Mental Health Care Friesland (GGZ Friesland), at the department of geriatric psychiatry (both ambulatory care and clinical care) in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. For two years he also worked for GGZ Friesland as a psychiatrist on the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands (Terschelling, Vlieland). Since 2012, Matheus works for the psychiatric emergency service of GGZ Friesland, located in the emergency department Jelgerhuis, Medical Center Leeuwarden (MCL) in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.

In 2016, Matheus also start working as a (geriatric) psychiatrist at Mental Health Care West-Northern Brabant (GGZ WNB), Halsteren, the Netherlands. He served as medical director at the department geriatric psychiatry and he is currently deputy director of psychiatric residency training (plv. A-opleider) and medical education. He is also training director in geriatric psychiatry and lectures, among other things, the courses anxiety disorders and geriatric psychiatry for the consortium psychiatricum ZuidWest Nederland (Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands). His teaching philosophy is influenced by the learning theory of constructivism. As a teacher, Matheus facilitates and monitors this process of learning to foster critical thinking, and create enthusiastic, motivated, and highly-driven medical specialists in training. Already as a 7-year-old child, Matheus was often to be found in the paddocks of both Formula 1 and MotoGP competitions at home and abroad with his father. His great idols were Niki Lauda (Formula 1) and Freddie Spencer (MotoGP). Matheus made countless attempts to convince his parents to become a professional racing driver. Unfortunately, they did not agree. In order to (partly) realize his dream, he promised that someday, “when I grow up”, he will become the doctor of these drivers. Many years later, in 2011, Matheus began his career as a circuit doctor for the Royal Dutch Motorcyclists Association (KNMV). In addition, he works as an emergency physician for the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix (MotoGP) at the TT-circuit

(8)

of Assen (the Netherlands) and is involved in MotoGP and FIM World Championship Superbike Racing (WorldSBK) competitions at home and abroad.

During his PhD trajectory (2012-2020) at the UMCG, Matheus was involved in various projects. He obtained a master degree in clinical epidemiology at the University of Groningen (RUG), the Netherlands (in collaboration with the EMGO+, The Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine of the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam and the VU University Amsterdam). In addition, he also obtained an Higher Education Teaching Certification, summa cum laude (grade: 98,4%) from Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. He wrote more than 60 scientific posters and conference papers for international congresses. In addition, Matheus also wrote 2 scientific books (on psychosurgery and nutrition in frail elderly) and 1 non-scientific book (cookbook). He has won 2 Awards, the SHARE PhD Top Publication Award in 2015 and 2019 at the University of Groningen. He participated in the (United States) campaign ‘320 Changes Directions’, a partnership between Talinda B. and the campaign to Change Directions, in honor of Chester B. The mission is to change how we think and talk about mental health, and enabling people who are struggling to seek help and streamlining resources for individuals and families. Finally, Matheus participates in the lifelong postgraduate PVOA project.

Besides work and study, Matheus' hobby and passion is cooking. He has followed several accredited courses and training in Belgium, France, Germany and Great Britain, including at Le Cordon Blue London Culinary School. He is currently a student at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts.

His further career as a scientist, doctor and chef remains a surprise. Time will tell.
