Niek Lopes Cardozo is chairman of the Dutch organisation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM), the principal funding organisation for physics research in the Netherlands, and full professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he heads the group 'Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion'.

As member of the Governing Board of the European Domestic Agency for ITER (‘Fusion for Energy’, in Barcelona) and other high-level European bodies, he is well acquainted with the interaction of big science projects with industry. In 2005 he co-initiated the consortium ITER-NL, in which TNO, FOM and NRG collaborate with industry, with the aim to optimize Dutch participation – by both industry and researchers – in the international ITER project.

He is recipient of the Koninklijke/Shell prize for sustainable development and energy.
