De auteur van dit proefschrift werd op 15 mei 1978 geboren te Breda. Na het behalen van het VWO diploma aan het Thomas More College te Oudenbosch, werd in 1998 de studie Biologie aangevangen aan de Universiteit Leiden. Gedurende de docteraal fase van zijn studie werd een stage op de afdeling Microbiologie van het Institute for Molecular Plantsciences aan de Universiteit Leiden gelopen onder supervisie van Prof. Dr. E.J.J. Lughtenberg. Hierna werd een stage gelopen aan op de afdeling Microbiology and Immunology aan Dartmouth Medical School, in New Hampshire, USA onder begeleiding van Prof. Dr. G.A. O’Toole. Na het behalen van het doctoraalexamen Moleculaire Biologie in oktober 2002 werd in januari 2003 begonnen met het promotieonderzoek aan de afdeling Moleculaire Cel Biolgie op het Laboratorium voor Neurale Ontwikkelingsbiologie van Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum. Dit geschiedde onder begeleiding van Prof. Dr. J.N. Noordermeer en Dr. L. G. Fradkin. In september 2007 zal Rene Wouda zijn carrière voortzetten als docent scheikunde en biologie in het middelbaar onderwijs aan het Rijnlands Lyceum te Wassenaar.
René Robert Wouda was born on May 15th, 1978 in Breda, The Netherlands. After finishing his VWO secondary education at the Thomas More College in Oudenbosch he enrolled in the Biology undergraduate program at Leiden University. Before graduating with a M.Sc. in Molecular Biology in 2002, the author of this thesis worked on two research projects at different universities. In 2001 he joined the lab of Prof Dr. E.J.J. Lughtenberg for his last year’s undergraduate internship at the Department of Microbiology at the Institute for Molecular Plant Sciences of the University Leiden. Shortly after that he undertook an undergraduate research project at the lab of Prof. Dr. G.A. O’Toole at the department of Microbiology and Immunology of Dartmouth Medical School, in New Hampshire, USA. In January 2003 he joined the group of Prof. Dr. J.N. Noordermeer and Dr. L. G. Fradkin at the Laboratory for Developmental Neurobiology (Department of Molecular Cellbiology) of the Leiden University Medical Centre to start his Ph.D. study. From September 2007 the author of this thesis will start teaching chemistry and biology at the Rijnlands Lyceum in Wassenaar.
