Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook October 2 – October 8, 2014
Moderate to heavy rain was observed across central Haiti and bordering Dominican Republic.
During the past seven days, moderate to heavy rain (>25mm) was observed across much of Hispaniola. The heaviest rain (>50mm) was observed across central/northern Haiti and western/northern Dominican Republic. Rain gauges in northeastern Dominican Republic recorded almost 100mm of rain during the past week. The above-average weekly rains helped to reduce thirty-day and seasonal rainfall deficits across dry areas of Hispaniola, including northern/central Dominican Republic and the southern peninsula of Haiti. Thirty-day rainfall totals are around average across Hispaniola with only localized areas in southwestern Dominican Republic observing below-average rainfall. Seasonal rainfall dating back to August 1st has also been near average across the island with rainfall deficits lingering only over southern Haiti. While rains have improved lately, the long- term impact from dryness felt during much of the summer is evident in analysis of ground conditions across Hispaniola.
According to NDVI anomalies during the middle of September, poor ground conditions remain across the southern peninsula of Haiti and bordering southwestern Dominican Republic. Elsewhere, localized areas of poor conditions remain across northern Dominican Republic, although recent rains have helped improve conditions. For the next week, a reduction in rainfall is expected as moderate to locally heavy rain (>25mm) is forecast in localized areas in central Hispaniola. Elsewhere light to moderate rain (5-20mm) is expected across Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
