Colophon

This PhD-thesis was an international cooperation, a ‘co-tutelle’, between the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and Aix-Marseille University (France).

The experiments in chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 were conducted at the Center for Human Movement Sciences, University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands.

The project was financially supported by funding from the Excellence Initiative of Aix-Marseille University - A*MIDEX, a French “Investissements d’Avenir” program.

PhD-training was facilitated by the research institute School of Health Research (SHARE, Groningen) and l’Ecole Doctorale Sciences du Mouvement Humain (EDSMH, Marseille).

I assessed the synergies that are hypothesized to emerge in the first step of the two-step process in discrete upper extremity movements by examining structure in variability

The relation between estimated and measured fingertip-position deviations from the mean of individual trials, the relation between fingertip variability and V ort , V ucm , and V

A repeated- measures ANOVA on joint angle variance was performed with Group (experimental group and control group) as between-participant factor and Condition (pretest and

Moreover, the phenomenon that horizontal curvature was larger in unconstrained movements compared to constrained movements led Desmurget and colleagues [7,57] to propose

To this end, we compared synergies and end-effector kinematics when participants (N = 15) performed discrete movements of identical amplitude in manual reaching (stationary

First, the results revealed that the relation between measured and estimated (i.e., based on the model) fingertip-position deviation from the mean of individual trials was stronger
