1. Complex natural communities appear to be neutral.

2. Small invertebrates, such as microsnails, offer more possibilities for the study of ecological systems than large vertebrates.

3. The impact of geographic scale on community assembly should be tested before anything else.

4. Studies of community assembly in the tropics are hampered by hidden intraspecific differentiation.
