Acknowledgments

And here we are! At the beginning of my journey, I could have the opportunity to come for 4 months as a Erasmus student. After going back to my country, i have tried to find the opportunity to come back again and I had a chance to get a grant. My project was supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey during 1 year. After one year I have gone back my country again. Therefore, thanks to Reynier for introducing me to the Sandwich PhD programme which later allowed me to come to Groningen again (third times). I could be the person that say goodbye to everyone many times and came back again.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people who have left a mark in my life, whether in the academic or personal aspect during this journey.

First of all, I would like to express my special appreciation and thanks to my supervisor Reynier F. Peletier. Reynier, you have been a tremendous mentor for me. I would like to thank you for encouraging my research and for allowing me to grow as a scientist. It is impossible to list how many things you have taught me and how many times you have showed me the way. I have learned a lot from you, especially how to do good research. I am also very grateful for your support and personal interest, especially during more challenging times. After i had left to Groningen, you did not stop supporting me and giving advice through video conferences and

Also, thanks to Reynier, I was able to collaborate with the stellar popu-lations group at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, where I had the opportunity to work with Alexandre Vazdekis. Alexandre, thank you for taking the time to discuss with me details about my research.

I sincerely thank the members of the reading committee, E. A. Valentijn, A. Aragón-Salamanca and R. Riffel for taking the time to read my thesis and providing comments which significantly improved the thesis in many aspects.

I would like to thank all the professors, post–docs and PhD students for making the institute a great place to work and enjoy our time during coffee breaks, lunches and borrels.

To the management team and secretaries at Kapteyn Institute: Lucia, Hennie, Gineke, Christa, Martine, Ramona and Maria; the computer group: Wim, Martin, Eite, and Leon. Thank you all for your work and your enthusiasm to solve whatever problems we students may have. My old and new officemates: Filippo, Aaron, Andrea, Simon and our honored officemates: Pavel thank you for all the lovely conversations and thank you for providing such a nice working spot. All of you have helped to make my PhD experience a very enjoyable one.

Elaheh, It was great to have you as a friend. We have been together from the beginning till the end of this journey. It is really hard to describe how many good and bad moments we shared together, especially during our coffee breaks (for you mostly decaf break), but your positivity, friendly and calm energy were always providing a boost for my motivation. You are such a sweet and kind person. Thank you for trying to keep me healthy with all the delicious fruit and yoga. It is really difficult to express with words how grateful I am to you for not only being an officemate but also for being an amazing friend. Also thank you and Rojman for your lovely and welcoming attitude and the enormous amount of the most

delicious dinner we had at your place.

Avanti (thank you for the most delicious tea you would bring from India), Olmo (thanks for your kindness), Cristiana (thank you for introducing me to knitting even if I have not been very successful) and Sara (thank you for providing me reduced SAMI data); I am happy we were office-neighbors and that i often stopped by for a nice chat or sharing the daily struggles. Pooja, Suma, Tirna, Samira, Hyoyin, Kristiina, Nika and all other female colleague in Kapteyn, I feel fortunate to be surrounded by female scientists who are incredible sources of support and inspiration. Umit, we spent a lot of time together to figure out which right we have as a scholarship student. Thank you for many coffees and talks we had over the years. I especially appreciate for your great helpfulness and helping me plotting in python.

I would also like to thank the previous members of Kapteyn: Stefano (for being nice and helpful friend), Dorota, Davide Massari, Manolis, Evandro, Jovan, Sampath, Bharat. Thank you for all nice conversations we shared over the past years. Seyit, thank you and your family for being helpful and nice. I am deeply grateful to you and Tugba for inviting me to your home when I have no place to stay in Groningen.

Reynier had quite PhD students around the time I started. This made our weekly group meetings a good moment to improve discussions and scientific insights. I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of our group meet-ings. Many thanks to Jaco (for many good IDL tips and plotting advise), Aku, Mustafa (also you and Tuba for providing delicious dinner we had at your home), Anastasia, Francesco, Teymoor, Nelvy and all the visi-tors I forgot to mention, thanks for good science and good times. I am very grateful to all SUNDIALs for all meetings, scientific time we spent together.

PBC members, thanks for your important support and advice. Marc, my PhD mentor, thanks for your interest in me and asking how I was doing. Equally as important as the people inside the institute are the friends outside the institute. Thanks to GUTSA for introducing me to special people. They have contributed to make my life in Groningen an enjoyable and unique time. I would like to specially mention a few of them: Funda, Gökhan, Arman, Faruk, Ayşegül, Nilay, Turhan, Yağız, Erdal ve Osman Abi. Thank you all for the fun evenings, the drinks and the very much needed laughter, and also for being my family in Groningen.

Finally, a special thank you to my husband İlker for your love and sup-port, since we met more than 14 years ago. One of the things that I most grateful for in my life is having met you. I can honestly say that I never would have made it without you. Thank you being there so many times for me, and sharing all my hopes and dreams and frustrations and strug-gles. I feel that what we both learned a lot about life and strengthened our commitment and determination to each other and to live life to the fullest. Love you, my partner in crime!
