Jesus Christ as “Jehovah”

~ New King James Version ~

Old Testament Passages New Testament Passages

1. In Connection with John the Baptist

Isaiah 40:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the LO R D; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts.

Malachi 4:5-6 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn6 the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

Matt. 3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight.’”

Matt. 11:10 For this is he of whom it is writ- ten: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.”

Mark 1:2-3 As it is written in the Prophets:

“Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.

The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

3

‘Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight.’”

Luke 1:17 “He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Luke 3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight.’”

John 1:23 He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the LORD,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

2. The Creator Exodus 20:9-11 Six days you shall labor and

do all your work, but the seventh day is the10 Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daugh- ter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the11 LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Col. 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were creat- ed through Him and for Him.

(2)

Neh. 9:6 You alone are the LORD; You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.

Psalm 33:6-9 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the7 waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses. Let all the earth fear8 the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it9 was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

3. The Maker and Sustainer of Heaven and Earth

Psalm 102:25-27 Of old You laid the founda- tion of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You26 will endure; Yes, all of them will grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed. But You are the27 same, and Your years will have no end.

Heb. 1:10-12 And: “You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; 11 they will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You12 will fold them up, and they will be changed.

But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.”

4. “Tasting” the Lord Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD

is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

1 Pet. 2:3 If indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

5. The Glory of the Lord Isaiah 6:1-5 In the year that King Uzziah

died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each2 one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and3 said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;

the whole earth is full of His glory!” And the4 posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am5 undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD

of hosts.”

John 12:37-41 But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet38 might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” Therefore39 they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: “He has blinded their eyes and hard-40 ened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes and understand with their heart, lest they should turn, so that I should heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

6. Every Knee Should Bow Isaiah 45:23-25 I have sworn by Myself; the

word has gone out of My mouth in righteous- ness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath. He shall say, ‘Surely in the L24 ORD I have righteousness and strength. To Him men shall come, and all shall be ashamed who are incensed against Him. In the L25 ORD all the descendants of Israel shall be justified, and shall glory.’”

Phil. 2:10-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that

11

Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

7. Call Upon Him for Salvation

Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass that who- ever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls.

Rom. 10:13 For “whoever calls upon the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

Acts 2:16-17, 21 “But this is what was spo- ken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come17 to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.... And it shall come to pass21 that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’”

8. Judgment of Mankind

Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteous- ness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.

Rom. 14:10-11 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written:11

“As I live, says the LORD, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”

9. Rock

2 Sam. 22:2-3 And he said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; the God3 of my strength, in Him I will trust, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; my Savior, You save me from violence.

1 Cor. 10:4 And all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

[cf. Deut. 32:4,15,18,30-31]

Rom. 9:33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

(4)

Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock and my for- tress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 18:31 For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?

Isaiah 8:13-14 The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. He will be as a sanctuary, but14 a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Eph. 2:20 Having been built on the founda- tion of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.

1 Pet. 2:5-8 You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priest- hood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Therefore it is6 also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” Therefore, to you who7 believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling and a rock of of- fense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

10. Shepherd Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall

not want.

Psalm 80:1-3, 19 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth!

Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir

2

up Your strength, and come and save us! Re-3 store us, O God; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved!.... 19 Restore us, O LORD

God of hosts; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved!

Isaiah 40:10-11 Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him. He will feed His11 flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those who are with young.

Ezek. 34:11-12 For thus says the Lord GOD:

“Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his12 flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scat- tered on a cloudy and dark day.”

John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”

John 10:14-16 “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.

As the Father knows Me, even so I know the

15

Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

And other sheep I have which are not of this

16

fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.”

Heb. 13:20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.

1 Pet. 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd ap- pears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

11. Savior Isaiah 43:3 For I am the LORD your God, the

Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place.

Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior.

Isaiah 45:21-22 Tell and bring forth your case; yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, a just God and a Savior; there is none besides Me.

Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the

22

earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

Hosea 13:4 Yet I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt, and you shall know no God but Me; for there is no savior besides Me.

Acts 4:10-12 Let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is11 the “stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.”

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there

12

is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Titus 2:13 Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

12. King Psalm 10:16 The LO R D is King forever and ever;

the nations have perished out of His land.

Psalm 29:10 The LO R D sat enthroned at the Flood, and the LO R D sits as King forever.

Isaiah 33:22 (For the LO R D is our Judge, the LO R D is our Lawgiver, the LO R D is our King; He will save us).

Jer. 23:5-6 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the LO R D, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.

In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will

6

dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LO R D OUR RIGHTEOUS- NESS.

Zech. 14:9 And the LO R D shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be– “The LO R D is one,” and His name one.

Zech. 14:16-17 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LO R D of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that17 whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LO R D of hosts, on them there will be no rain.

John 1:49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Rev. 17:14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.

Rev. 19:16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

1 Tim. 6:14-16 That you keep this command- ment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will15 manifest in His own time, He who is the bless- ed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality,16 dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen!
