I am writing this section moments after resigning from my thirteenth contract at the University
of Groningen. An odd accomplishment. Staying for so long clearly shows I had a really good time here. Writing these pages forms the end of an era; a great one; one which would have not been so great without the many people that I met and worked with during all this time. So thank you all for that.
Special thanks to Gerard.
Secondly, I would like to thank the members of my reading committee: Adri Minnaard, Martin Witte and Nathaniel Martin for approving the thesis. Extra dank aan Martin, voor het ongelofelijk
gedetailleerde nakijken.
Then I would like to thank my awesome paranymphs, Manu and Clemens. I cannot imagine a
better duo to accompany me into the aula. Manu you are my favourite colleague. Both because
of the great discussions and ideas we had about actual work, but even more for your great personality. Thank you for teaching me a tiny little fraction of Italian temper, thank you for the lovely conference trips, and thank you for always listening to my frustration whenever I arrived late in the office because of whatever total disaster happened that day. Clemens, thank you for
appearing in the Ruffles group. You are a great addition to the institute. I learned a lot from you, even though we did not work together on a project. Thanks for all the free advice you always give, whether I am asking for it or not :)
During my ten years in the Ruffles group there are many people that made this journey a lot of fun and much more endurable. Thank you Ana, Ivana, Manu (again), Katy, Annika and Lara for
being office buddies at some point in time. One might think an office with so many women would never lead to efficient research, but I think we all managed quite well. Thanks Cora, Zhi and Linda
for being my current office buddies. Sorry I was mostly anti-social, wearing my headphones while writing all the time.
Liliana, thanks for all the times you functioned as my portable UV/vis
spectrometer to give confirmation if my solutions were still yellow, and thanks for always turning on Virgin Radio. A lab ain’t a lab senza musica rock.
Nathalie, thanks for sharing a
bench at biochemistry with me.
Sambika, thanks for all the HCCA
aliquots you once made. I still used one last week!

Michael Lerch, thanks
for the nice collaboration for the conference in Basel. It was a real pleasure working with you, and I learned a lot from it. And finally from the ‘old’ days, pre-PhD time: thank you Núria, and Tieme
for training me back then. I managed, which means you trained me well!
Then, of course, Wesley, thank you for never suspending me! Thanks Marta, for everything you
did for the FMS, for nominating me for Faces of Science, but mostly thank you for the ‘gezellige’ chats at any FMS related event.
I also would like to thank Hanadi Sleiman. Although you did not
directly contribute to the research in this thesis, you know the time in your lab has taught me a lot and shaped me as the researcher I am today.
zelf mee mogen spelen. TQD, thanks for (almost) never complaining if I’d set you up for hours and
hours of measurements again. You are my favourite apparatus, even though you are not made by .
bijpraatmomentjes.
Furthermore thanks to everybody else at the Stratingh Institute. Thanks for the nice working
environment you all create together. I have only encountered nice people during these many years. Also thanks to all the people of biochemistry. I know I only appear downstairs once in a
while when I really cannot do without an ML-1 lab, but I feel totally comfortable in your labs now. Thanks as well for the nice daily lunch breaks. It is great to see how the relationship between up- and downstairs has changed over the years. Getting invited for the yearly lab-uitje felt as if our institutes had truly merged, which I think is the key to do even better science than we already conduct.
So people, thank you very much! After fifteen years at the RuG, I guess it is time to move on. It was awesome.
in mijn enthousiasme compleet overwerkt.
