Hazards Impacts Assessment for Hispaniola March 31 – April 6, 2011

A seasonable increase in rainfall was observed throughtout many local parts of Hispaniola during the last seven days.

In the last seven days, many local areas in Haiti saw a favorable increase in precipitation. The highest weekly rainfall amounts (20- 40mm) were received along the southern coastal departments of Haiti, as well as further inland across central Dominican Republic. Fair amounts (10-20mm) were also observed in the central and northern departments of Haiti. Compared to the last several weeks, the distribution of rainfall during the last seven days was more robust, which is indicative of the seasonable increase in moisture and rains normally seen during spring. The enhancement and expansion of rains are still expected to provide sufficient moisture conditions for the planting of crops in the next several weeks. Precipitation forecasts suggest a continuation of fair to moderate weekly rainfall (10- 45mm) throughout much of the island during the next seven days.
