Acknowledgements
They say that a PhD is a lonely journey, but I will always remember this time as one of great support. In German academia they use the word Doktorvater and ‐mutter to describe PhD supervisors. Henk te Velde and Maartje Janse have ensured that I reached scholarly adulthood in these past years. I am truly grateful for their inspiration, precision and, above all, willingness to believe in my abilities to succeed in‐ and outside academia. My gratitude goes to the friends and colleagues without whom I would have never finished this project. Geerten Waling made project work a true pleasure. Honorata Mazepus and Elisabeth Dieterman showed me the beauty of studying democracy in more ways than I ever imagined. Carolien Boenders and Anne Petterson always had an open door for questions about vaderlandse geschiedenis, and life. Aniek Smit and Esther Zwinkels were my guides in the exotic land of Dutch academia.
My thanks also include the numerous colleagues who provided feedback and gezelligheid, especially but not exclusively: Adriaan van Veldhuizen, Adriejan van Veen, Albertine Bloemendal, Bart and Jasper van der Steen, Diederik Smit, Girija Joshi, Joris Gijsenbergh, Lauren Lauret, Marat Markert, Mark te Vries and Onni Pekonen. I am grateful for the Section Vaderlandse Geschiedenis and the Political Legitimacy Profile Area for giving me an academic home. I owe the people of d|part for their warm company in studying political participation.
I would like to thank the doctoral committee for detailed and inspiring comments. Peter Stamatov for generously giving me the time to finish this project in a meaningful way. Willem van Rooijen has provided the layout.
