Curriculum Vitae
Reginald Victor Carl Theodoor van der Kwast was born on the October nd, in Manama, Bahrain. During his youth, he lived in many different countries: Bahrain, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands and the United States. In , he graduated from the American School of the Hague and obtained a Full International Baccalaureate Diploma as well as an extracurricular certificate for Higher Level Chemistry. That same year, he started studying Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the Leiden University. During his studies he became especially interested in molecular biology and cardiovascular research. As a result, Reginald sought out a master’s internship at the Vascular Surgery department of the Leiden University Medical Center. During this internship, he studied the role of q microRNAs in vascular remodeling under supervision of prof. dr. Quax and dr. Nossent. Afterward he secured an internship at the Division of Cardiology at the University of Washington under supervision of dr. Dichek. In this -month period he explored different strategies to increase expression of a therapeutic transgene to treat cardiovascular disease, resulting in his first co-authored publication.

Acknowledgements
I would like to thank everybody who contributed to the realization of this thesis and everyone who supported me during this period.
I am especially grateful to my promotor Prof. Paul Quax and my co-promotor Dr. Yaël Nossent.
Dear Paul, thank you for your genuinely caring supervision and support. I have learned a lot from your publication-oriented guidance, without it I would not be finished yet.
Dear Yaël, you deserve special thanks since your empowering style of supervising and enthusiasm have shaped me as a scientist. I hope to be as efficient and inspiring as you are one day.
I am also very grateful to Erna and my roommates at C : Karin, Leontien, Valerie and Fab. You were there for me during the good times and the tough times … and all the coffee breaks in between. Thanks for the support and all the fun we had.
I would like to thank all the other members of the Quax group through the years: Margreet, Eva, Eveline, Licheng, Sabine, Kjell and Alwin, for contributing to this great work environment. Furthermore, I would like to thank my students, Tessel, Daphne, Merel, Jort, Eliis, Tamar and Anton for their invaluable help.
