1. Positive evaluations of the instrumental attributes, symbolic attributes, and environmental attributes of sustainable innovations promote the adoption of sustainable innovations (this dissertation).
2. Particularly the symbolic value of sustainable innovations is an important driver of the adoption of these innovations, although people do not seem to acknowledge this (this dissertation).
3. The symbolic value of sustainable innovations particularly influences adoption in the early introduction stages (this dissertation).
4. People who identify as earlier adopters of innovative cars evaluate the symbolic attributes, but not the instrumental and environmental attributes, of electric cars more positively than people who identify as later adopters of innovative cars (this
dissertation).
5. People are less likely to adopt sustainable innovations when they believe that these have some instrumental drawbacks and only few others consider adoption. At the same time, some instrumental drawbacks and low adoption rates strengthen the influence of evaluations of symbolic attributes on the adoption of sustainable innovations (this dissertation).

Stellingen
1. Positieve evaluaties van de instrumentele attributen, symbolische attributen en milieu-attributen van duurzame innovaties stimuleren de adoptie van duurzame innovaties (dit proefschrift).
2. Vooral de symbolisch waarde van duurzame innovaties is een belangrijke voorspeller van de adoptie van deze innovaties, maar mensen lijken dit niet te onderkennen (dit proefschrift).
3. De symbolische waarde van duurzame innovaties is vooral een goede voorspeller van adoptie als deze innovaties net zijn geïntroduceerd (dit proefschrift).
4. Mensen die doorgaans als een van de eersten de aanschaf van een innovatieve auto overwegen oordelen positiever over de symbolische attributen, maar niet over de instrumentele en milieu-attributen, van een elektrische auto in vergelijking tot mensen die doorgaans relatief laat de aanschaf van een innovatieve auto overwegen (dit proefschrift).
5. Mensen zijn minder geneigd om duurzame innovaties aan te schaffen als ze denken dat deze enige instrumentele nadelen hebben en denken dat weinig anderen adoptie overwegen. Tegelijkertijd leiden enige instrumentele nadelen en een lage
adoptiegraad ertoe dat de beoordelingen van symbolische attributen van duurzame innovaties een sterkere invloed hebben op adoptie (dit proefschrift).
6. Instrumentele nadelen van duurzame innovaties moeten niet worden
gebagatelliseerd in campagnes om duurzame innovaties te promoten, omdat dit de positieve invloed van de waargenomen symbolische waarde van duurzame innovaties op adoptie kan ondermijnen (dit proefschrift).
