This day finally comes that I can express my sincere gratitude to the people around me in the past few years who have guided, inspired, helped and supported me during my PhD life.

First of all, I would like to thank my supervisor Professor Arnold Driessen who offered me an opportunity to join Molecular Microbiology group as a PhD student and provided a wonderful place and sufficient facilities to work on my project. I still remember the first time we met in Beijing, I was very nervous and my English back then was very poor, however your kindness gave me relief and we had a nice short talk. Your guidance and involvement gets me through my whole PhD years and we produced a complete doctoral thesis together. You gave me a lot of good advices when I had troubles with my project, in the meantime, you also encouraged me to be more independent. And your hard-working, scien-tific-strict attitude sets a good example to me.

I would like to thank my Co-supervisor Professor Roel Bovenberg. You encour-aged me to be more confident and your helpful suggestions during the pen-meet-ings every two weeks guided me in the right direction. I was deeply touched by your kindness and intelligence from your warm smiles, smart eyes and farsighted words.

Ciprian, my daily supervisor, I am truly grateful for your help from my very first day in our group. You have been very kind and patient to teach me all the techniques I needed to learn in the lab and willing to help me solve all the prob-lems I encountered during my project. You also comforted and motivated me when I was depressed with my slow progress in the first two years. I will never finish Chapter 2 without you.

I would like to thank Annarita and Carsten for your tremendous help in Chapter 3 and 4. You taught me how to work with CRISPR/Cas 9 technology and LC-MS and provided me a lot of knowledge about fungi. I also would like to thank Ol-eksandr Salo and Jeroen who helped me with HPLC and qPCR operation skills. I would like to thank the thesis assessment committee: Prof. Oscar Kuipers, Prof. Ida van der Klei and Prof. Arthur Ram. Thank you for contributing your valuable time to reading the thesis, proving comments on the thesis and approval

of the thesis for public defense.

I would like to thank Janny and Greetje who have provided us sufficient exper-imental materials and maintained a nice and tidy working environment.

I would like to thank Bea and Anmara. Whenever I asked for help, you were always willing to help me efficiently and effectively.

I would like to give my appreciation to Prof. Juke and Dirk-Jan for your com-ments and suggestions during work discussions.

I would like to thank Reto, Fabiola and Ahsen who shared the same office and exchanged nice conversations with me about work and life.

My grateful thanks go to all the other MolMicans in the past and present for your help and support during last four years: Nuan Yang, Marten, Fernando, Danae, Laszlo, Riccardo, Amalina, Zsofia, Xiaohuan Zhang, Hyun Yong, Stefan, Annabela, Anne-bart, Yvonne, Susan, Andre, Sabrina, Erick, Niels.

My sincere gratitude also goes to my Chinese friends. I would like to thank Yan-ping Geng who helped me a lot in the lab and in my life and accompanied me when I was in labor in UMCG hospital. I would like to thank Huifang Yin who has been my neighbor and loyal friend even though I moved two times and lived in three different places in Groningen. We accompanied each other through hap-py and difficult times. I also would like to thank Qian Li, Haojie Cao, Yanglei Yi and Boqun Liu. We came to Groningen together and had joyful talks and delicious dinners together. I also would like to thank Xiangfeng Meng, Yuxiang Bai, Bin Jiang, Mengqiu Ge, Miao Wang, Pu Yang, Jingjing Deng, Xin Zhao, Yi Zhang, Gang Huang, Qiuyan Yang, Peng Wang, Jing WU, Ning Ding and other helpful Chinese people. You all made my life so enjoyable and memorable. I would like to thank Prof. Yongqin Zhang, Prof. Xueming Zhao and Hongwu Ma who have been my mentors in the domestic universities during my bachelor and master study. Their profound knowledge and enthusiasm on science research have inspired me and encouraged me to pursue a high level in microbiology field. My sincere thanks also go to Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) and
