Algorithms

for algebra

The content of the present special volume of JPAA is based on the MEGA’ Symposium, held at Eindhoven University of Technology 4-6 June 1996.

MEGA is an abbreviation of “Methodes Effectives en Geometric Algebrique”. This indicates the main theme of the conference: an algorithmic approach to algebra. It was the fourth in a series of biannual symposia. The first was held in Castiglioncello (17-21 April 1990) the second in Nice (21-25 April 1992), and the third in Santander (5-9 April 1994). Proceedings of all three have appeared in the Progress in Mathematics Series of Birkh5user Verlag:

More than 100 people attended the conference, about 44 papers were presented, while 29 papers appear in this volume. Also, 7 demos were given at the symposium. The main conference topics were Effective Methods and Theoretical and Practical Complexity Issues in: Commutative Algebra, Geometry, Real Geometry, Algebraic Number Theory, Algebraic Geometry and related fields: Algebraic Analysis of Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, Associative Algebras, Group Theory, Algebraic Groups and Lie Algebras, Algebraic and Differential Topology, as well as applications of these fields. Most of these topics are touched upon in this volume.

The first selection of papers was done by the MEGA’ programme committee, which consisted of Daniel Lazard, Make-Fran~oise Roy, Arjeh M. Cohen, Dimitri Grigoriev, James H. Davenport, Joos Heintz, Andre Galligo, Michael Pohst, Teo Mora, Carlo Traverso, Tomas Recio, Marius van der Put, and Bemd Sturmfels. We are very grateful for their help and pleasant cooperation in the editorial work for this volume.
