Biosketch

Elisabeth (Elsbeth) Kalenderian-Groenewegen was born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. She studied dentistry and received her DDS-degree in 1983 from Rijks Universiteit Groningen, The Netherlands. After her study, she moved to Boston as a Fulbright Scholar to perform an internship and a residency at Boston Medical Center and New England Medical Center, Boston, USA, completing her specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery through Boston University in 1986. In 1989, she received a Master’s in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. In 2007, Elsbeth made the transition to an academic career at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, starting as an Instructor and rising to Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Dentistry. In addition to this function, she is also an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Elsbeth has published more than 30 scientific publications in ISI-journals and is frequently asked to be a speaker at conferences for Quality Improvement, dental diagnostic terminology (EZCodes), Meaningful Use, Leadership, and Patient Safety.

Elsbeth was not only active in academics, but also in administration. She served as the Administrator of Children’s Extended Care Center, part of Children’s Medical Center, Boston, MA (1990-1995). Subsequently, she held several administrative and leadership positions at the North Shore Medical Center (Salem, USA), including Director of Strategic Planning and Provider Relations, Vice President for Provider Relations and Medical Management, and Vice President of Patient Care Services (1995-2001). Afterwards, she was the Executive Director of Transition House (Cambridge, USA), a human services organization, (2001-2004). Later, she worked at the American Heart Association (New York, USA), first as Vice President for Quality Improvement Initiatives and later as Senior Vice President for Health Strategies (2004-2007).
