Oppression and poverty forced blacks to be innovators in dramatic arts. Black Theatre was the result of this innovation. It became a major weapon in the fight for freedom in South Africa.

Black Theatre had to be a distinct practice divorced from the main theatre as the two had un-reconcilable goals; the former to educate the black masses about apartheid and its oppressive laws, while the latter entertained the white minority and afforded them a reason why they should be privileged.

Black Theatre is by black people, for black people and addresses issues pertaining to black people.

That which apartheid system denied the oppressed black masses, Black Theatre granted them, namely voice.

You had/have to be black to understand the thinking, challenges and the issues behind Black Theatre and the optimism that it would achieve something.

Black Theatre acted as a mirror of the experiences of the oppressed black majority.

Consequently, it had to change in time, in accordance to the experiences of black people.

The power of the apartheid system made Black Theatre illusive and almost invisible and glide freely through the defence mechanism and radar of the apartheid system.

Black Theatre gave blacks a temporary reprieve to laugh and mock apartheid, and go home rejuvenated and continue with the struggle for freedom.

Black Theatre has proven to be like the mythical bird phoenix, rising from the ashes to live forever.
