First and foremost I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors. Daniel, thank you for giving me the opportunity to do a PhD here. During these years I have learned a lot from you and have enjoyed my time working under your guidance. Thank you so much for all the encouragement and support you gave me. I feel very fortunate that I have a supervisor, who is the type of researcher I wish to become one day.

It is my pleasure to thank all my colleagues and friends from the Bernoulliborg. In particular, I would like to thank Gabriel, Ben and Markus for all the great time we had together. Our birthday trips are among my favourite memories, I hope we will keep up this wonderful tradition. Gabriel, thank you for your constant support and encouragement in the period leading up to the defence. Ben and Markus, thank you for agreeing to be my paranymphs.
I would like to thank all my officemates, Nikolay, Matthijs and Pan Li for mak-ing our office an ejoyable place to work. Special thanks to Matthijs for translatmak-ing the summary of this thesis into Dutch, and to Nikolay for providing the template of this thesis (among many other templates during the years). Further I would like to thank Bohuan, Caio, Eric, Georg, Jian, Lorenzo, Lucas, Mahdi, Pedro, Siamak, Teun, Vladim´ır and Yongyiao for the game nights, dinners and other activities that made these four years a wonderful experience.

My biggest personal gratitude is to my family, especially to my mother, brother and sister. My decision to leave Hungary had a huge impact on their lives, yet they supported me without condition. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
