Time flies like arrow! My PhD life in the Netherlands will be ended up, it is the time to say goodbye to everyone here and express my gratitude to people help me a lot during my research and my life. The experience of study in the Netherlands will be unforgettable in the rest of my life, I am also sure this experience will contribute a lot in my future research.

First and foremost, I offer my earnest gratitude to Adri for accepting me to continue the research in your group in 2016, three years ago it is the most difficult time in my life, I appreciate you succeed in saving my PhD career, then finally I can finish my PhD. Your have abundant knowledge in different chemistry research direction, your kindness and patience are impressive to me, the advice you gave to me in my research helps me solve the difficulties I encountered in the carbohydrate chemistry. It is a pleasant experience to work with you. Thank you for everything you have done for me!

I am deeply grateful to my co-supervisor Martin. Thank you for helping me analyze the NMR and revise my paper and thesis. I also learned a lot from your instructions on sugars. Thanks for your patience to explain me the details about the coupling constant of sugars, and every time to check my experiment part to find the small mistakes that are not easily to see. Thanks to help me analyze the reason from my failed experiments.

My deep thanks to Marthe and Liubov for great help with my chapter of “streptozotocin”, spend a lot of time on bacterial test with my compounds, also contacted other groups to do test on cells, reduced a lot of work and time for me, finally I can finish this chapter smoothly, I appreciate these help.

I would like to acknowledge the members of the assessment committee, Prof. K. Barta, Prof. P.H. Elsinga, and Prof. R.J. Pieters for their time and efforts to evaluate and approve this thesis.

I would like to thank Niek Eisink, thanks so much for guiding me in the lab with great patience, and also offering me a lot of help to revise my paper and thesis.
