Synthesis and application as activity-based probes and inhibitors
1. A real multidisciplinary project is arduous. It teaches you modesty and perseverance. This thesis.
2. Multiple probes and analysis techniques are needed to identify the genuine targets of a compound.
This thesis.
3. It is undeniably confusing for the reader when research groups engage into “replies” and “comments” about each other’s publications.
4. When a compound is reported as “selective” towards one residue or protein it should always be read “selective in the biological settings used”.
Chapter 3 & 4
van Esbroeck et al., Science 2017, 356, 1084–1087.
5. An effective research group is a place where people are not afraid to admit what they don’t know. Supervisors should set an example to advocate this rare quality.
6. In a Chemical Biology project, scientists of different backgrounds should engage in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship. Handing over a compound to biologists or testing a compound for a chemist can be considered as commensalism or even parasitism.
7. A perfectly challenging project keeps the student addicted to a subject.
8. Continual improvement processes make a city liveable and successful. Implementing such effort in areas in which you already excel is striking.

9. It takes time to see it that way but Groningen’s rush-hour bike commute is not chaotic. It is complex and therefore can be reasonably predictable.
