Four years, four years abroad, four years in a new country that I now truly love, four years of work and adventures that I would like to conclude with a few words for the people that helped me to finish my PhD.
First, Martin. Thank you for this opportunity and letting me be your first PhD student. You are an amazing scientist with a genuine passion for chemical biology. You taught me a lot during the last four years and I enjoyed a lot our discussions. I heard that Professors always remember their first PhD student and I hope not to be the exception.
Adri, you are humble and inspiring. You have always been available and always showed me authentic interest. You have confessed several times that the biological part of my thesis was a challenge for you to grasp but the curiosity you offered was uplifting.
Anna, thank you very much for your help and fruitful discussions. How easy is it for you to switch from French to Dutch, then again to English or Italian remains a mystery to me (and I think I forgot one or two other languages). Marthe, thank you for your suggestions. You joined the group and brilliantly extended the biology side of our Chemical Biology group and your remarks are always on-point and very insightful.
I was able to finish my thesis because I collaborated with skilled and generous scientists. Arnau, Danae, Menno and Larisa; thank you for your help and teaching me many subtleties regarding the work with bacteria. Rieza and Niek; thank you for helping me starting the mammalian cell culture.
I was also able to finish my thesis because I had the luck to work with several students; Jerre, Marlieke, Tjalle, Vincent, Valerie, Coen and Anna; thank you all for your contribution.
Thank you to all my labmates and group members; Niek, Niek, Jeffrey, Nabil, Steven, Leti, Manhattan, Yagiz, Mira, Bea, Peter, Varsha, Ramon, Milon, Jonas, Judy & all the others. Thank you for your help and nice working atmosphere.
Manhattan, Manuel and Zuzanna; thank you for your support and the nice time we shared together, I miss you.
Thank you to my dear friends outside the lab especially Belen, Sylvain, Lise & Stefan; Andres & Maryam; Mariana & Felix and Gael.
Merci a ma famille; Lucie, Thomas & Augustin, Mamie Jo, Sylvaine (Mouma), Gilles (Papa); merci pour votre soutien et vos encouragements. Larisa, thank you for letting me be with you. You are joyful, inspiring and beautiful. You are the most patient teacher ever and the last four years seemed like a walk in the park because of you. When life gets tough, I always remember that I’ll be with you at the end of the day and everything goes easy. You are my family and my life.
