Renée de Mutsert werd op 8 januari 1977 geboren te Rotterdam. Na haar gymnasium diploma behaald te hebben aan het Krimpernerwaard College te Krimpen aan den IJssel begon zij in 1995 aan de studie Voeding en Gezondheid aan de Wageningen Universiteit te Wageningen. Als onderdeel van deze studie werden twee afstudeeronderzoeken uitgevoerd, een bij de afdeling Humane Voeding en Epidemiologie aan de Wageningen Universiteit en een bij het Center for Studies of Sensory Impairment, Aging and Metabolism in Guatemala. Na haar afstuderen in 2000 heeft zij vier en een half jaar bij Numico Research B.V. te Wageningen gewerkt als voedingskundig onderzoeker. In januari 2005 begon zij aan een promotieonderzoek naar het verband tussen de voedingstoestand en overleving van chronische dialysepatiënten aan de afdeling Klinische Epidemiologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum onder leiding van dr. Friedo W. Dekker, dr. Els W.

Boeschoten, prof. dr. Ray T. Krediet en prof. dr. Jan P. Vandenbroucke. De resultaten van dit onderzoek zijn beschreven in dit proefschrift. Tijdens haar promotieonderzoek heeft zij met verschillende onderzoeksgroepen in Nederland, Noorwegen en Zweden samengewerkt en volgde zij cursussen epidemiologie van Jan P. Vandenbroucke en Frits R. Rosendaal, Mitchel Klein, David G. Kleinbaum en Miguel A. Hernán. Sinds januari 2008 is zij lid van de redactie van het tijdschrift

‘Journal of Renal Nutrition’. Vanaf februari 2008 werkt zij als postdoctoraal onderzoeker op de afdeling Klinische Epidemiologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum aan onderzoek naar de oorzaken van ziekte bij mensen met obesitas. In maart 2008 heeft de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) haar een Rubicon-subsidie toegekend voor een verblijf van zes maanden aan de Harvard School of Public Health te Boston, Massachusetts in de Verenigde Staten.

217 Renée de Mutsert was born on January 8, 1977 in Rotterdam. After she passed secondary school (Gymnasium) at the Krimpernerwaard College in Krimpen aan den IJssel she started the study ‘Nutrition and Health’ at the Wageningen University in Wageningen in 1995. She completed two theses, one at the department of Human Nutrition and Epidemiology of Wageningen University and one at the Center for Studies of Sensory Impairment, Aging and Metabolism in Guatemala, and obtained her Master of Science’s degree in September 2000. As of July 2000 she worked as a researcher at the department of Clinical Nutrition at Numico Research B.V. in Wageningen. In 2005 she started her PhD research at the department of Clinical Epidemiology of Leiden University and Medical Center under the supervision of Dr.

Friedo W. Dekker, Dr. Els W. Boeschoten, Prof. Dr. Ray T. Krediet and Prof. Dr. Jan P.

Vandenbroucke to study the association between nutritional status and survival in chronic dialysis patients. The findings of this research are described in this thesis.

During her PhD research she collaborated with research groups in the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, and followed courses in epidemiology by Jan P.

Vandenbroucke, Frits R. Rosendaal, Mitchel Klein, David G. Kleinbaum and Miguel A.

Hernán. Since January 2008 she is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Renal Nutrition. As of February 2008 she works as a post doctoral researcher at the department of Clinical Epidemiology of Leiden University and Medical Center to study causes of disease in obesity. In March 2008 the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded her a Rubicon fellowship for a stay of 6 months at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
