This work was difficult and it was not. This work was easy and it was not. This work was a challenge that I needed. This challenge led me to a number of scientific and personal discoveries with the goal of becoming a Doctor of Philosophy (this must be a pleasant feeling , but I can only imagine for now). However, this title has never been my motivation. The reason I decided to spend 5 years (16.67%) of my life working on a PhD project was my curiosity about life (sometimes on a molecular level) and people (often on a molecular level). Therefore, I would like to thank a vast group of people who intentionally or unintentionally contributed to my PhD-time in Groningen (and beyond).

Sabeth, thank you for giving me a chance to do my PhD and for your patient management of me and my project. During my PhD, you were the mentor who I needed to better understand the scientific world and to learn how to understand mine and other peoples’ research. I really appreciate all of your efforts spent on me.

Ingrid, I would like to thank you for your endless advice and critical comments on my work; It has greatly improved my research. I did my best to implement all of your recommendations. Your comments about my work helped me to more fully understand my own research and to realize that there is always more information hidden within cells than we can grasp.

Dear assessment committee members, Prof. Antoine van Oijen, Prof. Guillermo Garcia-Cardena, and Prof. Wesley Browne, thank you for your time and for your interest in my research presented in this book. I am glad that you shared your opinions with me and that you helped me to look at my work from different perspective.

Pharmaceutical Analysis group, thank you for accepting (or tolerating) me for past years and for sharing your joys and sorrows with me. You made me feel like a part of you from my first day at your doorsteps; I greatly appreciate it. I feel obliged to mention some key contributors. Jolanda, your omniscience about every administrative detail and perfect control over it will never stop impressing me. Largely due to you, I managed to keep track of my working hours registry and every imaginable document that was demanded from me. Our technicians, Patty, Jean-Paul, Maurits, thank you for your care and for your help in setting up my experiments. You are the reason I could always find or make a necessary tool when needed. Fellow PhD students, Nadiah, Sergio, Pim, Hanan, Margarita, and Maureen, thank you all for your remarks about my work and for the chats over lunch and coffee. Frank, Mark, Jouad, I would like to thank you for doing your best to make me a better football player (hard task, I know) and less fat (almost impossible, that I know as well). In the aforementioned areas, no noticeable progress was achieved, but you were still around. Thus, I owe you big time!

Mrs and Mr Lawton, I would like to thank you for all the time we spent together and for all of the removals in which you kindly let me assist you. Magda, thank you for sharing your countless frustrations and enjoyable moments with me in Groningen, but most importantly, thank you for introducing me to James. James, I much appreciate time spend together and our beer brewing adventures.

To my all sailing crew members, thank you all for making every cruise a time to remember. I counted more than 40 human beings in past 5 years who decided that spending their holidays under my command was a good idea (I do not judge anybody), thus it would be difficult to name all of them. However, some names have to be revealed. Stachu, it is always great to have you around as a co-captain with all of your fun facts and rationale for each action. Basiu, I appreciate your unique expertise in predicting and pointing out every organizational detail that I overlook. Agato, you have

stood next to me for 19 years (63.33% of my life) and it will be difficult to say how important you are to me. I am simply happy that you are there for me.

David and Jonas, for me you are always related to festivities and to different entertaining activities I have experienced during my time in Groningen. I was always curious if you were a trigger for such events or if you just know where to find them. Nonetheless, I am happy that we met and that we keep visiting different cities together searching for more entertainment.

Magdo, without you I never would have begun my PhD in Groningen and I most definitely would never have finished my PhD without your support, patience and tolerance throughout this past year. Although it often does not look like it, I must admit that I am extremely lucky to have you around! I appreciate all that you have done for me.

My Paranymphs, Pieter and Gert, over the years we have shared many good experiences and some bad moments that have made the past 5 years worthwhile. Pieter, I remember you helping me find my first apartment in Groningen and carrying my suitcases around the city; all of this was done with a smile on your face. This positive attitude can be contagious and always impresses me. Gert, I could spend hours on writing how much I appreciate your friendship with me. However, I prefer to go with you for a beer and enjoy one more discussion with you. I know that you prefer that as well, so shall we?

Szymon and Mateusz, I am proud that I am your older brother. You are always there for me to support and criticize my decisions. I greatly appreciate this approach and most of all, I appreciate that you always have time for me.

Now it is time to zmienić język na polski…
