The research described in this thesis was carried out in the Evolutionary Genetics group at the Centre for Ecology and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) and from 2015 onwards known as the Gronigen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES) of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, according to the requirements of the Graduate school of Science (Faculty of Science and Eegineering, University of Groningen).
