Climate Prediction Center’s Central America Hazards Outlook October 22 – 28, 2020

Abundant rains were observed in much of the region, including previously dry parts of Belize.

1) Below-normal rainfall over the past few months, as little as 50% of normal, has led to struggling vegetation health and abnormal dryness across Belize.

2) Recent heavy rains on saturated ground had led to observed flooding and landslides in many Pacific-facing regions of Central America. Additional moderate to heavy rains are forecast this week and will keep the flood risk high.

Very heavy rainfall is likely to occur through much of the region this week.

During the past week, heavy rainfall (100-200mm) was registered over parts of southern Guatemala, El Salvador, and northern Nicaragua. Much increased and heavy rains were present in the southern half of Belize which badly needed the moisture. Positive rainfall anomalies of more than 50mm are evident in southern Guatemala and El Salvador. In contrast, light rainfall (<25mm) has been recorded over northern Belize, central and northern Guatemala, along with north-central Honduras. The week’s rainfall was well-below normal for small parts of central Guatemala and southern Honduras, and several portions of Costa Rica and Panama. Significant 30- day rainfall deficits (50-200+mm) are apparent throughout most of Belize and in central Guatemala, as well as 90-day performance that is as little as 50% of normal. This correlates with mediocre vegetation conditions observed over many of the same areas. Rainfall deficits are also observed in southeastern Nicaragua and some negative impacts to vegetation health are now apparent despite good frequency of rain days.

Heavy rainfall of potentially more than 100mm is expected over parts of southern Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and northwest Nicaragua during the outlook period. Heavy rains should also continue in Costa Rica and Panama. Flooding is likely over the often already rain-saturated areas in southern Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Along with the enhanced rainfall, tropical development needs to be monitored in the Caribbean during the period. However, it seems less likely during this outlook period
