The Role of Moral Components in Anti- and Prosocial Behaviour in Primary Education

by Dorinde Jansma

1. There is no strong domain or developmental variability in the assessment of anticipated emotions in moral transgressions. This suggests rather stable inter-individual differences in the anticipation of emotions and one underlying dimension indicating that the child’s self feels committed to moral standards (chapter 2).

2. Marginal deviations in prosocial behaviour tend to develop towards the norm. Moral functioning does not moderate this tendency (chapter 3).

3. A deeper understanding of the moral precursors of pro- and antisocial behaviour requires an integrated analysis of all moral components, i.e. moral sensitivity, moral reasoning, moral motivation, and moral character (this dissertation). 4. Class moral characteristics help explain bullying-related behaviour over and above

individual moral characteristics. This suggests that targeting all children in class might be a success enhancing ingredient of educational interventions (chapter 4). 5. Interventions targeting bullying-related behaviour should not focus on training

moral reasoning skills (chapter 4).

6. Promoting agreeableness in education is a promising avenue for further improvement of class-based intervention programs targeting antisocial and bullying-related behaviour in middle childhood (chapter 4 and 5).

7. Sustaining an intervention program aimed at the social development of children over a longer period of time makes such a program more effective (chapter 5). 8. “Human beings use the power of scientific knowledge to assert and defend the

values and goals they already have” - John Gray

9. “The great and terrible thing about life: there's just so much bloody potential” - The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
