DANKWOORD

Isaac Newton schreef in 1677 aan zijn collega, ‘Als ik verder heb gezien dan anderen, komt dat doordat ik op de schouders van reuzen stond’. Naast de wetenschappers op wiens inzichten ik heb voort-gebouwd, bevonden zich onder die reuzen veel dierbare collegae. In talloze bijeenkomsten, gesprekken en acties, zijn ideeën en inzichten ontstaan, verrijkt, vertaald naar de praktijk, of na toetsing weer verworpen. Zonder hun nieuwsgierige, kritische, eigen-wijze en humorrijke inbreng was dit proefschrift er niet geweest. Enkele mensen noem ik.

Pim Miltenburg, Patricia Zorko en Peter van Haasteren dank ik voor het vertrouwen en de ruimte die ik kreeg om binnen het KLPD als promovendus te mogen werken. Peter van de Beek, Koos van den Boom, Paula Huitema, Jan Kirpestein, Reinier Ruissen en Patrick Voss dank ik voor de vele inspirerende discussies en de band die we daarbij hebben opgebouwd. Met genoegen denk ik terug aan de deelname in en/of gesprekken met de leden van Quattro Stagioni, Transport Security, KIS, Delta, het TEST-team, de Groep Sensing, de luchtvaartpolitie, het observatieteam en het tactische team. De ontwikkelingen die wij samen vorm en inhoud gegeven hebben, zijn maatgevend gebleken bij de vorming van de Nederlandse Politie. Daar kunnen we trots op zijn.

Mijn academische vrienden Erik de Vries en Paul van Fenema wil ik danken voor hun oprechte betrokkenheid en de vele vakinhoudelijke discussies. Hun grondige kennis, reflecties en suggesties waren van onschatbare waarde. Mijn promotor Rik Maes dank ik voor de eervolle gelegenheid om bij hem te promoveren.
