Susan C. Aitken (1982, South Africa) was born and raised in Johannesburg. Her journey into research started with a Bachelor of Science in genetics and microbiology at the University of the Witwatersrand, and was followed by a BSc honours in medical biochemistry and Master of Science in virology at the University of the Witwatersrand medical school. Her MSc research was where she started her focus on viruses whilst investigating genetic variations within the Rift Valley fever virus. The journey continued with being accepted as a PhD candidate for a position in the Affordable Resistance Test for Africa (ARTA) project, conducting research toward developing low cost, pragmatic approaches to HIV-1 drug resistance monitoring in resource-limited settings. The majority of the research was conducted in Utrecht, the Netherlands, with some months being spent in Uganda and South Africa. Her research was conducted under the supervision of promoters Prof. dr. Tobias Rinke de Wit, Prof. dr. Wendy Stevens, and co-promoters dr. Rob Schuurman, and dr. Carole Wallis. After living for five years in the Netherlands she returns to South Africa to continue as the research manager with the Ndlovu Medical Trust, Research Consortium Project, in Groblersdal, South Africa. In addition to a curiosity for viruses, Susan is also an avid animal lover, bush enthusiast, keen photographer, and yoga fanatic. She is the daughter to Michael and Blanche Aitken, and sister to Peter-John Aitken and his wife Julia, and loving aunt to Samantha and Rebecca.
