The ‘Musicscape – Live!’ research

questions

Which live music is available for the

inhabitants of the city of Groningen/Utrecht

in two ‘ordinary’ weeks?

How many concerts?

Which musical genres?

Where? Which neighbourhoods? Regular or non-regular

venues?

By whom (professional, semi-prof or amateur)? (U)

For whom?

When (day/time)?

(4)

Methodology: Groningen

 No ‘formal’ data

 No ‘expert’ interviews to generate data  No ‘researcher’s intuitions’

 ‘Ethnographic’ observation: walking around; surfing the internet;

checking the (local, regional) newspapers et cetera

 Preparatory phase (collecting locations) + data-gathering phase  1 researcher, 4 students

 One dataset (2010) of 293 concerts

 Publication: Musicscape Groningen – Live! (2010)

 Other products: a website, a composition, a public presentation, a

small arts exhibition

Methodology: Utrecht

‘Ethnographic’ observation (see above);

Additions: 25 interviews with producers and

programmers; visiting and reviewing 50 concerts;

Two datasets of 315 (2011) and 370 (2013)

concerts; more specified information on musical

genres; participation of musicians as prof /

semi-prof / amateur;

Result: book Musicscape Utrecht – Live!

Discussion 3: The empirical basis

(15)

Conclusion

Initial aim Groningen: ‘thin description’ of everyday

musical life here and now

Derivate: policy making as an object of the

ethnomusicological study of a modern western society

In combination with Utrecht: new possibilities:

A strong educational tool

A comparative study of musical life in two cities

A longitudinal study of changes in the ‘live musicscape’

A model to be adopted in other cities?
