Withoutt the help and support from the following people (and in 5 years you come across a lot off nice people!!!!!!) you would not have this book in your hands at this moment

Jaap-Jan:: one thing I can say for sure...it has never been monotonous to work with you!

Withh your great enthusiasm sometimes it was difficult to keep focused on the main goal of ourr research but you always gave me the freedom to follow my interests and ideas and I learnedd a lot from that. I guess you also learned from me, especially on how to deal with an aioo deep... I provided several opportunities for you to do so. And, every time, you were able too make me look at the bright side of the situation...even now with the promotion arrangements.. Thanks a lot!

Dirk:: It has been a great pleasure to work under your supervision. I have learned a lot from

you.. I am sure my scientific english has greatly improved after you corrected all my abstracts andd papers. In these last months I have been bothering you several times with all the promotionn troubles and you were always there to help me. Thank you!

Peter:: I came in your group just like that...however, since the beginning you made me feel

welcome.. I really appreciated that. It was very fruitful to work in your group. I have learned a lot,, not only theory but also all kinds of techniques. I have also learned how a science group shouldd work. I think you are doing a great job with the development of MCB. Thanks a lot!!!

Thee group in Utrecht: I have started my PhD research working with you guys and it was a

greatt start. The atmosphere in the lab was very nice, as well as during the work discussions. II enjoyed it a lot. Leo: your enthusiasm is contagious; it was nice to work in your group. Thankk you for revising my thesis and for accepting being part of the reading committee. Laurien:: I have never met someone with so much energy as you! It was really great working withh you! You showed me how to perform a perfusion experiment remember? The first time it seemedd so complicated! I have great memories of the meetings that we attended together, thee huge amount of bridges in Dusseldorf (at least it looked like the place had hundreds of them!)) and the "delicious" pretzels that you could so "easily" eat....the new ways of ordering winee in Lake Tahoe, after-congress party, skiing lessons, surfers in San Francisco's beaches...Itt has been fun! Besides the fun you were always willing to share your knowledge withh me, even now. Thanks! Paul, Sandra, Miranda, Jan, Deon, Lei, Comelieke, Corneli, Lisa,, Bart, Belinda, Evert thank you all for providing the "gezelligheid" in the group.

Thee group in Amsterdam: we are still one group, right? I really had fun with you guys! The

"heell gezellig" P114, now P112, was sometimes the most unsuitable place to work however, withh respect for each other and a good laugh we always managed to keep focused (of course thatt was too much to ask on Friday afternoons!!!!!!). Jaap: on my first day at the CLB I had a coffeee mug on my desk, with my name on itt and a note saying welcome to IHE... that was so sweett of you! The meetings in Geneva were just great (a man among the women....) and the truthh is that you can gossip as good as a woman!!!! When you left, the lab was not so noisy anymoree but, even then, there was, once in a while, an mp3 file coming directly from Chapel Hilll to remind me how good the Boss is!!!! I missed you. Mar: the incarnation of the south-europeann temperament! We had good times together, like that evening with the girls and a personall salsa instructor, our long dinners in the most gezellig restaurants in Amsterdam, the meetingg in Geneva, shopping in the Haarlemmerstraat with Daniel. I hope we will keep in touchh once I leave the CLB. Thanks for all the help in the lab, especially with that d**ned PSGL-11 paper!

Paula:: the super mom! Not only you manage to take care of your wonderful children but you stilll have the time to worry with all of us, you are one of a kind. I always enjoyed our conversationss about life, families, kids ("short long" trip from Maastricht to Utrecht); you have alwayss been there for advice and for help...Thanks! Erik: we always made of an afternoon isolatingg HUVEC, an afternoon of gossiping and fun. Thanks for teaching me the isolation methodss and helping me all the time with the confocal and especially now with the new system,, you've been great! And of course I would also like to mention the rest of the group whoo was always willing to help and made everything much easier: Jup, Janine, Willy, Marloes,, Marion, Eloise, Edwin, Sandra, Franca, Sasha, Sander, Sven, Daphne. Thank you all.. The people from P112: bedankt allemaal voor de lekkere (soms) muziek en de graapjes opp het lab.

Somee people who left the CLB: Kirsten: it was nice getting to know you. We both have

learnedd from the good and bad times we shared. Thank you for everything. Anna: the Finnish student.... I really enjoyed having you on my project. Good luck with your own research and preparingg everything for the wedding! Maarten, de altijd gezellige Maarten! With our research nott having much in common we still managed to have a lot of topics to discuss over a coffee inn the coffee room: the art of good cooking, the art of eating good food, the art of drinking goodd wine, the art of preparing great Christmas dinners, the art of enjoying life!!! Altijd gezellig!! Next time Portuguese food in Utrecht!

II am also grateful to the people from other labs/institutes that helped me with my most difficultt chapter...Hans van Thienen and Juan Garcia-Vallejo, thank you both!!!!

Friends:: Of course these can never be forgotten, especially when they made my time in

Hollandd much easier. I have made great friends during these last years. Mieke&Rody, Mark&Maria,, and Marcel&lnger: thank you all of you for the great weekends, for the great nightss in Amsterdam, Groningen and Utrecht! I had a lot of fun with you in the last 5 years! wee have been through each other's good and bad moments together. No one better to be besidess me on the big day! Thanks for everything and I wish you all the luck with finishing yourr own book. Rachel: we know each other now for 2 years, however I feel like we have alwayss been good friends. We had great times together: the meetings in Lunteren, Noordwijkerhoutt and Geneva, the shopping in Amsterdam, the horror movie on a dark, snowyy end of the day..., good laughs during a sailing weekend... Thank you for helping me withh all the preparations. Next step will be....shopping!!!!!!!!

II would like to thank all the support I have received from my family in The Netherlands, especiallyy from Ma and Pa. You have been great!

Jan,, it doesn't matter what I might say here, it will never be enough to tell you how important youu were in the making of this book. Maar ik wil wel iets zeggen en als altijd in het nederlands,, english, e portugues...

Whenn tenderness seemss tired at last of its offices, andd sleep, that most uncertain vessel,

stilll delays,

whenn blue bursts from your eyes andd searches mine forr steady seamanship thenn it is I speak to you of words

desolate,, derelict, transfixedd by silence...

Dankk je. Amo-te muito.
