Verder onderzoek is mogelijk door andere partijen zoals hulpverleners en personen met PADG te interviewen over hun perceptie over de rol van ouders om een vergelijk te maken tussen de perspectieven en eventuele discrepanties op te sporen.

De betrokkenheid van ouders als noodzakelijke voorwaarde tot
herstel bij afhankelijkheid van alcohol en/of illegale drugs
Uit onderzoek aan de UGent blijkt dat ouders vaak in de kou blijven staan bij de professionele hulpverlening voor het begeleiden van hun kind in het herstelproces van alcohol en/of illegale drugs. De focus ligt op de vertrouwensband, met als gevolg dat ouders worden uitgesloten, daarom is het moeilijk om als ouder een ondersteunend rol te spelen.
Het empirisch onderzoek bestaat uit 11 semigestructureerde interviews met ouders en geeft zicht over hoe zij met problemen van een middelenafhankelijkheid van zoon/dochter omgaan. De rol van ouders in het herstelproces is afhankelijk van verschillende factoren zoals verbondenheid, hoop, draagkracht/-last, veerkracht, etc. Het is een kleinschalig onderzoek, daarom mogen de resultaten niet veralgemeend worden.
Het doel is om aanbevelingen te schrijven naar professionele hulpverleningsinstanties als aanzet tot het meer betrekken van ouders in het herstelproces van hun kind die problematisch alcohol en/of illegale drugs gebruikt (heeft). Dit onderzoek is een bewustmaking van de kracht en vaardigheden die ouders bezitten, om een meerwaarde te bieden in het herstelproces.
Professionele hulpverlening
Ouders van wie zoon/dochter middelenafhankelijk is, ervaren over het algemeen dezelfde pijnpunten. Het grootste struikelblok is dat het initiatief om te herstellen van het kind zelf moet komen, maar wanneer zij het probleem niet zien, verandert de situatie niet. De professionele hulpverlening is een toegevoegde waarde, maar vaak niet voldoende aanwezig, waardoor ouders hun rol in het herstelproces niet optimaal kunnen opnemen.
Een middelenafhankelijkheid is een gezinsziekte waar ouders onder lijden, maar de nood om betrokken te worden krijgt onvoldoende aandacht. De vertrouwensband tussen ouders en kind is niet te vergelijken met deze van professionele hulpverlening en patiënt. Ouders aanvaarden niet dat de hulpverlening zich beroept op het beroepsgeheim. Hij/zij is niet meer in staat zelf beslissingen te nemen over het eigen leven. De mogelijkheid moet geboden worden dat ouders om gezondheidsredenen en in het voordeel van het kind beslissingen nemen in hun plaats, zoals een verplichte opname.
Ouders maken een vergelijking tussen fysieke klachten die in het ziekenhuis onmiddellijk behandeld worden en mentaal problemen door problematisch alcohol en/of illegaal druggebruik die op wachtlijsten komen te staan. Deze problematiek moet zo snel mogelijk behandeld worden, omdat de personen met een afhankelijkheid vaak binnen een paar dagen geen hulp meer willen aanvaarden.

Ouders willen gehoord worden zonder stigma’s te moeten ervaren, toch veroordelen sommigen hen. Zij blijven ondanks de negatieve commentaren hopen, want zonder hoop is er geen mogelijkheid tot herstel.

What data will you collect or create?
Er worden verschillende soorten data verzameld. De belangrijkste zijn de audiofragmenten van de 11 interviews, daar wordt telkens een transcript van gemaakt om de data te kunnen vergelijken. De data komt van respondenten, ouders van wie het kind problematisch alcohol- en/of drugs gebruikt (heeft). Zij vertellen over hun noden, gevoelens en gedachten.
Er zijn audiobestanden, maar ook uitgetypte versies die gebruikt worden voor de analyse. Naast
