Het onderzoek draagt bij aan de theorievorming rond de afhankelijkheidsrelatie tussen afnemers en leveranciers en de relatie daarvan met performance en vertrouwen. Uit het onderzoek is gebleken dat kan worden bevestigd dat vertrouwen tussen afnemers en leveranciers wederzijds is. De positieve relatie tussen vertrouwen en performance wordt niet bevestigd. Dit weerlegt de relaties die in voorgaande onderzoeken zijn gevonden. Uit eerdere onderzoeken is naar voren gekomen dat vertrouwen goed is voor de samenwerking in afnemer-leverancier relaties. Het zou kunnen dat door een goede samenwerking de performance van de relatie verbeterd en dat dit niet een direct gevolg is van vertrouwen.

Symmetrische afhankelijkheidsrelaties blijken geen significante positieve invloed te hebben op vertrouwen en performance. Asymmetrie in afhankelijkheid blijkt zelfs positief samen te hangen met vertrouwen in de relatie. Dit werpt een nieuwe blik op de afhankelijkheidsrelatie tussen afnemers en leveranciers. Asymmetrie in afhankelijkheid is in voorgaande onderzoeken vaak beschreven als iets dat vermeden en/of gecorrigeerd moet

worden. Dit onderzoek geeft aan dat asymmetrie ook voordelen kan opleveren in afnemer-leverancier relaties.
