Conclusie

Het gezinsfunctioneren en opvoedstress waar de huidige studie onderzoek naar deed, blijken geen verband te hebben met (de ernst van) kindermishandeling. De gezinssituatie die als controlevariabele fungeerde, blijkt daarentegen wel te zijn gerelateerd aan zowel de aanwezigheid als de ernst van kindermishandeling. Als de gezinssituatie anders is dan twee biologische ouders is de kans op kindermishandeling aanzienlijk hoger. Dat de enkelvoudige relatie tussen het gezinsfunctioneren, opvoedstress en (de ernst van) kindermishandeling niet is gevonden kan ten grondslag liggen aan diverse aspecten. Het begrip gezinsfunctioneren is een relatief breed begrip die wellicht niet specifiek genoeg is waardoor gedrags- of

ontwikkelingsproblematiek bij kinderen (Berger et al., 2004b) of psychische problematiek van ouders (Stith et al., 2009) wellicht een directere relatie met (de ernst) van kindermishandeling hebben. Ook zou het zo kunnen zijn dat er naast opvoedstress waar de huidige studie zich op focuste, ook andere vormen van stress een rol spelen in relatie tot kindermishandeling (Deater-Deckard, 2004). De huidige studie heeft één interactie effect met betrekking tot de ernst van kindermishandeling gevonden. Een betere jeugdbeleving en minder opvoedstress zou namelijk samenhangen met een ernstigere mate van kindermishandeling. Ondanks dat er weinig onderzoek naar de ernst van kindermishandeling is uitgevoerd, gaat dit tegen de verwachtingen in en is dit gebaseerd op onderzoeksresultaten met een te lage power. Meer onderzoek is nodig om hierover een betrouwbare uitspraak te kunnen doen. Ook de potentiele causale relatie tussen de gezinssituatie en kindermishandeling dient door vervolgonderzoek geverifieerd te worden om betrouwbare praktische aanbevelingen te kunnen doen.
