6. Conclusie
6.1 Beperkingen
Dit onderzoek kent echter ook enkele beperkingen. In eerste instantie wil ik daarbij ingaan op het berekenen van winststuring bij de ondernemingen in Nederland. Ik heb gekozen voor het modified Jones model, omdat deze het meest geschikt werd bevonden in het onderzoek van Dechow et al. (1995). Echter zijn er natuurlijk meerdere methoden beschikbaar voor het bepalen van discretionaire accruals. Verder onderzoek zou uit moeten wijzen of hierdoor de resultaten afwijken.
In Nederland zijn een kleiner aantal ondernemingen aanwezig die beursgenoteerd zijn dan in grotere landen of indien er meerdere landen worden meegenomen in het onderzoek. Hierdoor is de steekproef bijna te beperkt om gebruik te maken van de cross-sectionele modellen om winststuring te berekenen. Door de coëfficiënten te schatten per sector krijg je een betere voorspelling van de verdeling discretionaire en non-discretionaire accruals (Bartov
Marlies Zeewuster | MASTERAFSTUDEERWERKSTUK ACCOUNTANCY 2014 35 et al., 2000). Of dit effect heeft op de resultaten van de regressieanalyses zal ook aangetoond moeten worden door verder onderzoek. Voor mijn onderzoek was dit te veelomvattend en ik verwacht niet dat door een overstap naar de cross-sectionele modellen de hypothese voor elke groep investeerders bevestigd zal worden. Er is namelijk voldoende bewijs geleverd vanuit de theorie dat geen verband tussen de hoeveelheid buitenlandse investeerders en de mate van winststuring aannemelijk is.
Verder is de slechte identificeerbaarheid van de niet-professionele investeerders een beperking van het onderzoek. Doordat niet voor elke onderneming alle aandeelhouders bekend zijn, moest ik deze ondernemingen uit de steekproef verwijderen. De afkomst van de beleggers is een essentiële variabele in dit onderzoek, maar geen informatie dat bekend gemaakt dient te worden door de onderneming of niet bekend is bij de onderneming. Dit is een reden waardoor er nog maar weinig onderzoek is gedaan naar effecten van buitenlandse niet-professionele investeerders.
Ik wil afsluiten met een suggestie voor vervolg onderzoek. Ik heb in dit onderzoek gekeken naar de totale groep buitenlandse investeerders en daarbij onderscheid gemaakt tussen institutionele beleggers en niet-professionele beleggers. Er zou ook onderscheid gemaakt kunnen worden op basis van afkomst. Investeerders uit Europa zijn wellicht beter bekend met de omstandigheden in Nederland en de cultuur dan investeerders uit Azië en Amerika. Europese beleggers zullen daardoor minder te maken hebben met informatieasymmetrie dan investeerders uit een ander werelddeel, waardoor ze beter toezicht kunnen houden en wellicht winststuring kunnen voorkomen.
Dit onderzoek is een aanvulling op het eerdere onderzoek naar winststuring. Ook vindt het aansluiting bij de groeiende aandacht voor corporate governance en de stijgende hoeveelheid actieve internationale investeerders. Vele tegenstrijdigheden in de bestaande literatuur hebben er voor gezorgd dat er vragen onbeantwoord bleven. Dit onderzoek heeft een bijdrage geleverd door het wegnemen van onduidelijkheden, aangezien naar mijn weten de relatie tussen de totale groep buitenlandse investeerders op de mate van winststuring bij ondernemingen in Nederland nog niet eerder is gelegd.
